How many spots left?

they backcount to the previous class. so in order to do that, your previous class cant be full. for example, if you sign 23 in 2010, you can only backcount 2 in 2011 because that fills up your 2010 class. make sense?

Yeah, I understand that part. So I'm guessing with the 26 right now, there is only one spot we can back count to last year (2009)? But if a couple of the guys don't qualify and can't "enroll" then we could "sign" two more. That's my understanding at this point anyway.

To summarize:

I understand:
1) We have 77/85 scholarships assigned
2) We can sign up to 28, but only enroll 25 per year
3) Transfers do not count against any year's recruiting class

Unclear:
1) Do early enrollees count against the current years 25 enrollees
2) With 26 "signed" players for this year, are we done, or is there wiggle room to sign more players.
3) Obviously we have lost players in the past few years, but do the recruiting numbers from those classes have anything to do with transfers?

1) Early enrollees can count to the current year's class, or the previous year's class if there is room.

2) Not sure what you mean. Is there room for us to sign anther recruit for 2010? It's July, so it is mostly irrelevant. I think if we wanted to, we could sign 1 more.

3)No, not specifically. For example, if it just so happened that we signed 28 guys in 2008, and they just happened to all be here despite us being under the 85, it would not affect the signing of a transfer who first entered college in 2008.

In brief, no as long as the team is under the 85 total.

3 of this year's 27 count towards 2009 because of early enrollment. I'm pretty sure more than 3 enrolled early but that's the max number we could backcount. There early enrollees for 2010 count for 2009's class because they enrolled in school early.

Right.

Yes, as long as there are recruits that can enroll early so they can be back counted.

Don't let anyone give you a hard time about asking these questions, this is confusing to EVERYONE. Including coaches.

1) When you say if there is room, does that mean x/25 or x/28? How many did we sign last year (class of 2009)?

2) I just knew we signed the punter recently, but didn't know if there was anyone else that could be floating around.

3) Makes sense

25. The extra 3 would be for the class two years previous, and you can only back count 1 year, not two (makes sense, because an early enrollee is starting school early by one semester, not one and a half semesters).

With the late additions to the class, I am not completely sure. I think we signed 26, but back counted at least a couple.

EDIT: Actually, with the punter I think 27. If we back counted 3, we signed (24) that year, so that's why we can sign 26 in 2011, and more if any of our 2010 class doesn't make it in (up to 28).

When trying to figure out how many new enrollees you can backcount against the previous year what matters is how many you enrolled in the previous year, not how many you signed. The SEC limits signees to 28 per year. The NCAA does not limit signees; instead, the NCAA limits enrollees to 25 per year. So, if say only 22 actually enrolled (for whatever reason) in 2009, then three 2010 enrollees could backcount against the 2009 class limit, effectively enabling enrollment of 25 more 2010 enrollees (besides those 3 backcounters) for a total of 28.

good info. I didn't realize transfers didn't count against the class. Do Juco transfers count though?

Also, if there is anybody who can give some specific numbers, that might help avoid some confusion.

From what I understand we can sign 25 players a year, 28 if you count early enrollment guys(players such as Tyler Bray, Corey Miller and etc). You can have 85 scholarship players on a team. I'm not positive but I think transfers do not count to your yearly scholarships only your total 85.
Also, Does anyone know how teams today are over-signing? Auburn for instance signed 32 players this year? Someone please tell me how teams are doing this.

We can have 85 total. We were somewhere in the 70s last I saw. Think of all the players who have left the team in the last 6 months and plug these guys in their place. Plus, we were already short to begin with. Does not count against the 28 limit.

I think they count on some of them not qualifying.

This is good information but where do you get the total scholarships of 77? I counted the players on scholarship, and it is closer to 80 or 81 players on scholarship for the comming season. I didn't count BB, and I assumed all of the 2010 signees would qualify and enroll in school.

I think we are right at 80 scholarships with Malik

should be able to bring in 5 more transfers...I will post a spreadsheet later

Thanks, 5 more transfers at the right positions would help a lot.

Go Vols!

couple questions on this cuz i really don't know.

Is Shane Reveiz on scholly? I didn't think he was.

Is Lamaison still on the team? I know everybody broke the story that he had decided to leave but then it seemed like he kept going to class.

... I'm starting to really like this team's makeup. Depth in a few spots will be tough, of course. But if we can get 1 more decent OL (I'm talking to you, Tyron), we may be a lot better than people think.

Simplify the playbook a bit to accommodate the QB position (and the OLine, for that matter), gradually bring the offense along as their skill sets grow, and trust that Coach Wilcox (and Chuck Smith) can get the defense to play solid, if not spectacular. No, we probably won't beat AL or FL, but we shouldn't get embarrassed by Vandy or KY either.

These are the basics:

No more than 85 total enrolled on scholarship (NCAA rule).

Can sign max of 28 per year (SEC rule).

Can enroll max of 25 per year (NCAA rule); but can backcount current year enrollees to preceding year if less than 25 enrolled that year.

Pretty sure that the only transfers that count against the 25/28 class limits are JUCO recruits; i.e., they're essentially new recruits just like HS recruits, not "transfers".

So UT can take as many USC transfers as will fit under the 85 limit.

Good Post!

Where's everyone getting this information? I just don't see it in the D1 manual. Yes, transfers do not count against a school's LOI limit of 28 – even JUCOs. Like you said, that's different.

My interpretation of the bylaws is that transfers are still 'initial counters' during the year an institution first provides them athletically related financial aid – or, in certain instances (i.e. mid-year enrollees), the following year.

It doesn't matter if the student-athlete comes from HS, JUCO, or a 4 year university. At least I can't find any exceptions. All that matters is when they enroll and when the institution places them on athletic scholarship for the first time.

Do you know which bylaw states otherwise? I would think it should be under Article 15.

Bylaw 13.1.1.3.3 allows us to recruit USC players & 14.8.2c allows them to transfer here without having to sit out a year...
