How many still think Spurrier is a genius?

i don't know about that......you listen to him, and he's not exactly talking up how good his players are currently.....while he's not directly comparing them to his FL players in the past, but he's not talking about anyone being a difference maker either.
Didnt Spurrier come out and say that this team was ready to compete for the SECCG at the beginning of the season???

I would say they were just as prepared as anyone in the east, wouldn't you?
yep, i think that had more to do with the comp in the division than SC itself.

and even when SC made it #6 in the nation, he was the first one to say "we aren't the 6th best team in the country".

Spurrier isn't the type of guy to talk anything up during a losing streak. Besides I think Arkansas leads the league in scoring or did, recruiting to USC isn't exactly like trying to recruit to North Dakota State. He is getting a little too much slack here.

Once he finds a QB and a few receivers in the same season, he will be a consistent 9 win guy, with the occasional 10 and 11 year seasons. It is obvious to me he hasn't found him yet. If Smelley develops....look out.

I think Spurrier is one of the best we'll ever see, but I still can't imagine that ever happening at South Carolina. There are just too many things working against him . . . not the least of which is his age.

If that is the case, we know enough about his ego to understand he ain't leaving on a losing note. Where does he land?

I still think he can and will win at SC.

and recruting at SC against GA, Clemson, TN, FL, Bama, VT, GT, Auburn, FSU etc...isn't the same either, even for SOS.

but i do agree, he probably is getting a lot of slack, but again, it's all relative for SC football compared to some others out there......

Some people are saying it's just "South Carolina" as some excuse for him. That USC fans are elated just to have him and get to a bowl. NO they aren't. Although USC has no football history worth mentioning, the fanbase expects to compete for SEC titles. Hence the hiring of Holtz and Spurrier. They expect to compete with UGA, UT, FL, etc...I have been to probably 20 games in Columbia and grew up a SC fan. They aren't satisfied with what alot of people on here think they are satisfied with.

they've beaten each of those teams and Clemson since he's arrived, and lost heartbreakers to UT and FL twice.

i'd say he's competing, just not getting to the next level.

and the fans, you are correct, i have several SC friends here in Charlotte....they're disappointed, sure.

but they also have this level of "accpetance" as that's just the way it is......despite the aspirations and expectations etc...and it's the same sentiment i hear on the local sports shows from SC fans that call in as well.....

i don't pretend to be a USC insider or anyting, i wouldn't claim to have my finger on the pulse of the SC fanbase, just what i hear from my buddies and what is said on the radio...that's my impression.

The company I work for is based out of Columbia, so we probably see a lot of the same things. I think you'd agree that whatever the expectations might be, there's almost a culture of inferiority at work over there. It's like they think they should be better, but they understand if they are not.

Just such a thin line in sports sometimes. I was thinking about that Foster fumble on our last drive. So LUCKY that we recovered.

Please . . . don't do that to me. I'm still having nightmares about those 3 seconds after the ball came out.

You are correct. They don't feel like winners because they have never really won. I have never understood it. I don't see them winning 2 titles in a 10 year span. But I would think 1 in 10 years would be hard NOT to do. They have good facilities, fabulous fanbase and economic support, good coaches, and good HS football to pull from in SC, NC, and GA.

Exactly . . . You go over there and look at Williams-Brice Stadium (even though it's off campus), the new basketball arena, the atmosphere downtown, the fan support etc. and it's hard to figure out why they don't occasionally win something.

After personally watching what Spurrier did at UF it's hard to say he's not. Had he retired from there he would be one of the best ever. Still waiting to see what the Skins and USC do to his image.

I think what he did at Florida was so dominant that I doubt anybody is even going to remember his NFL stint.

I think THIS YEAR should have been Spurrier's year at USC. I don't see this mediocrity in the East again next year. This was the type of year a USC or UK needed to get to Atlanta and they both blew it.
