How much money do we give Heupel at season end?

If he leads Tennessee to the SEC championship game or to the playoffs………I’m fine with another raise.

Otherwise one raise a year is good. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving Heupel. I think he’s doing a fantastic job. I also don’t want to see him go somewhere else; however Tennessee has been in this type of boat before……..for long time.

If he does something epic……..fine give him what he deserves…….he would have earned it. However let’s not start throwing double raises out there like it’s a paid holiday or something.

Your Points are all fair and I agree with your premise. I would do small raises each year. The reasons are simple:

He is outperforming everyone‘s pre-season expectations if you go back and look at what people though including most on this board. Pre-season not sure anyone even seriously considered UT to challenge UGLY or Satan.

Half of the other SEC teams and many other teams in the nation would easily trade their coach for CJH.

Lastly a lot of coaches walk into a team with good players that had a terrible coach who were just underperforming. CJH walked into a dumpster fire in a Covid year with more players walking out the back door then coming in the front door. They have taken a team of lesser talent and coached them up to compete.

I'm absolutely not underselling what he has accomplished.

I think even 10-2 should easily win him Coach of the Year.

I just have seen a LOT of instances where ADs needed to listen to Lee Corso and say "not so fast my friend" when signing absolutely ENORMOUS extensions and raises to a coach that has shown some really good things but hasn't proven consistency.

With where things are going, if we abide by the A&M and now Michigan State standards we could be staring down the barrel of a $70-80mil mistake. Michigan State looks absolutely terrible this year and they're completely screwed.

A&M can't even annul their abusive marriage to Jimbo and they have ridiculous money compared to us and just about everyone else. These are program crushing mistakes.

You are saying ENORMOUS and I am saying show him consistent raises and pay to get him to the top 25% in pay with a one year extension and raise every year. I do believe if I was AD, I would give him a 1 year extension and 7.5-8 million a year salary as long as the year doesn’t implode.

If he gets to 10-2 with this talent level, even with the latest raise he will be under paid.

The problem with small increases over many years is another team (I.e.: OK, NE, WI can and will pay Heupel the money now. Show the man some respect and pay him at the mid-point of the SEC or better. Currently CJH is the 10th or 11th highest paid coach in the SEC.

Anyone of you that said not time for a raise yet feel differently now that CJH has led UT to wins of 2 of the 3 must win games in only his second year. The year after 30 players left the program. Two years after a 3-7 season.

Time for another raise yet? Surely others will come knocking for him at the end of this year now!
