How this season changed my mind on a 12 team playoff

@luthervol - this is not the NFL. There are never more than about 3 really good college teams any given year. Bad game is a bad game. So far Georgia, TCU and Michigan don't have any bad games. Why water down the playoff with a bunch of undeserving teams with 2 and 3 losses? 12 team playoff is pure greed there's no good reason for it.
I simply disagree. GA had multiple bad games.......hell they were losing to Mizzou with 5 minutes left in the game, two scores down going into the fourth. Michigan and TCU had multiple bad games that they managed to win. Winning one or two bad games opposed to losing one or two bad games is not that much of a difference. There are multiple teams in the top 12 that could beat TCU, Michigan, and even GA on any given Saturday.

Many were given that opportunity and didn’t do it. Just because a team could lose doesn’t mean that’s how it ought to play out. If we forced UGA to play 100 games, they’d surely lose a few. That doesn’t mean they should have to justify their claim to a championship to an 8-4 team that might get lucky on one Saturday.

The four best teams will not be the four teams in the playoff. That pretty much says it all for me.

They were allowed to benefit from Bama injuries.
Nice evasion. But who was the better team? Bama or GA?
Or maybe Bama was just better on one day and GA was better on another.......which makes my point.

And injuries are part of football. Both GA and SC benefited from our misfortunes surrounding the timing of the game.

We will get nowhere in this debate.
I believe a larger playoff field is a great thing for the game, the players, and the fans; and will go a long way in better determining a champion.
You believe otherwise and that's okay.

The 4 best teams are in there. 3 of them are undefeated. It doesn't matter who you are, going undefeated is no small thing.

I 100% disagree.
What you are claiming is that two teams that play during the regular season cannot be two of the four best teams.

GA and TN could never be two of the four best teams in any given year? absurd
Bama and TN could never be two of the four best teams in any give year? ludicrous
Etc...........

The only thing your line of reasoning accomplishes is to perpetuate the belief that the easiest schedule is the best schedule - and that is in no way good for the game.

It makes the point that randomly being better in January is somehow more important than losing by three scores 60 miles from your campus in December. There’s no way to say that settled who the best team was. It just invalidated one win and laid more importance on another.

That's sort of the point of the whole playoff concept that every major sport at every level uses.
You play the regular season to make it to the playoffs.............and then you have the playoff season.

We're talking about this year. And just about every year up until this point. There's less than 4 teams championship caliber any given year. We ain't one of them South Carolina put that to rest. Alabama ain't either. Georgia is. Regardless what we think of Michigan's schedule they thrashed Ohio State and are unbeaten. TCU didn't have a walk in the park to get where they are. That said, I'm disappointed we weren't able to sneak in. And I wouldn't apologize for it to anyone if we did. But expanded playoffs watering everything down is not a positive in my book.

No problems with disagreement. I believe there are always more than 4 teams capable of winning the championship, which I guess means they are championship caliber.
But we would have been one of them had there been a 12 team playoff, or even an 8 team playoff. I have no doubt we could beat any of the four in a playoff game (we could also lose to any of the four).

I just don't get viewing an expanded playoff as watering everything down; if anything, it does the opposite.

We need a playoff but you should have to earn it. To expand it like basketball is absurd. I was all for the 8 team playoff. Keeps it simple and enough teams to decide a true champ. I have warmed to a 12 team playoff with top 4 getting bye’s. But we can’t keep expanding at some point it waters down the product to much. Anything over 16 will start really watering down interest and teams that truly shouldn’t be considered. I really hope we just stop at 12. There is always going to be crying by somebody that they were left out that is just tough. Get there or go home. GBO

What would be the percentage chance if we upped the teams to 64?
99.99. But it's not worth adding 52 teams to increase the chance by less than 1%.

Put it is certainly worth adding 8 teams to increase the chances by 88%.

That's why 12-16 keeps coming up as the perfect number. 8 wouldn't be horrible.

Don’t get me wrong……..I’ll love it when Tennessee gets in……and I would love it if it was a 12 team playoff this year because Tennessee would get in.

just saying NO team except the current top 4 deserves to be in. Everyone had their opportunity and everyone blew it……and not barely or lightly……they all blew it HARD!!
I completely agree with you but you could have a scenario where a deserving team gets left out.

No doubt

It has happened at least once already.

Just think it will cheapen everything. Now a loss won’t mean anything. And several 3 loss teams will be in the playoff……..no need to schedule any strong teams……just play your regular schedule and win most of them.

don’t get me wrong…….it will be fun to watch. Just hoping the regular season continues to be as fun and exciting.
