The Chatt Times, in their weekly position grades, said Hurd was more effective than Lane last week. Now Butch gave him more carries yes but his average per carry was less than Lanes.
I didn't get to pay close attention with how the backs played especially while pass blocking or running routes. Did I miss pn how Hurd played better or was the Chatt Times wrong?
Not that it matters but Im wondering if its Hurd performing or Lane losing the atarting role?
Of course with our Oline play Jamaal Lewis couldn't run the ball effectively right now

I think last year Butch deferred to the veterans to aid buy in. This year
Potential>pedestrian performance at least when things are close like they are with Hurd and Lane.

Jalen passes the eye test!

He has been one tackle from breaking a big run multiple times. It is just a matter of time before he breaks loose. I'm not sure Lane has that breakout potential but he is a solid back who runs hard.

ATT YDS AVG

13 54 4.2 Lane

Personally they were both effective regardless of the numbers. After watching the off playback video Freak posted, both players results were stymied by some blocking assignments not executed properly.

Butch knows this year is a wash. He's getting his back of the future experience for a huge role the next few years.

hurd has better runs, and a couple of touchdowns. they seem to be sending lane up the middle to get the hard short yardage tho. I suspect that has something to do with it.

I think Hurd can take the hitting from the LB's better while dishing a little of his own. They had that GPS tracking on him and determined he plays faster than Lane. Plus with our line, dancing at the line, looking for a crease is not helpful. They need to take the hand-off and hit the hole, it wont be open for long.

Just curious, what's your role on the coaching staff?

Your big boy punch as the 1st comment doesn't even make sense considering I was asking those who watched closely why Hurd was better. I also didn't say the CTTP was wrong I was asking.
Did you even mean to post that on this thread? When wit finds you holler back.

I was wondering if the Timea simply saw more carries/yardage and thought O he must be better or if there was something I missed.

This is what I was hearing on the Swain Event. Also heard that Lane appears to be playing slow and not hitting the hole fast enough. Said he is not making decisions fast enough.

Lane has had better numbers all year but they are giving Hurd the lions share for some reason. I'm ready to see what Derrell Scott can do.

On the Swain Event they believe Butch is giving Hurd more carries trying to get him ready for league play.

What do you mean "a wash"? If Butch misses a bowl game this year his seat gets warm next year.

I wouldn't consider that a reason to pack it in and call the season "a wash", before he even loses a single game.

Butch's seat will not get warm if we go 5-7

I like the way Marlin runs in traffic, he has quick feet and makes good decisions most of the time, the OL needs to get deeper down field on those LBs. Hurd is effective, but I like ML more at this time.

Hurd is 8" taller than Lane, so each and every carry he will pick up eight additional inches. So if Hurd carries the ball 75 times today, he will gain 16.6 more yards than Lane. Go Vols!!

I'm not necessarily advocating that we change our offense, but I don't think Hurd's talents are maximized running read-option plays in a shotgun offense. Hurd has great lateral quickness for a player his size, but it's hard to make jump cuts every play at 6'3" tall. Hurd looks more like a traditional downhill runner who would benefit running out of an I formation behind a blocking fullback, much like Eddie George did behind Lorenzo Neal from 1999-2000.

Of course, we don't have the linemen to control the line of scrimmage yet, and moving to an I formation would diminish the role of our strongest position this year, WR. Hopefully, with some solid recruiting and development from the strength program we can sprinkle in some downhill runs from a two-back or two-TE formation in the future.

Lane has been hurt every year and I believe they want to protect him from injury. In addition, Hurd needs the experience to become more productive during the SEC schedule. It seems to be the best for both Lane, Hurd and the team.

When the game was still close, Lane got stuffed at the line some and when he had something, he only got what was given from the blocking. Didn't create extra yards. Hurd made 1-2 yards more than was given, even on plays where nothing was there. Lane had a couple longer runs (8-10 yards) near the end of the game when the other team knew the game was over which padded his average.
