How was Hurd "more effective"?

I think your going to be more effective if you play the most. So far that is the reason Hurd has done more he has had more opportunities. Hurd still has a worse average but he has made some great blocking plays preventing sacks and has caught the ball better.

The Chatt Times, in their weekly position grades, said Hurd was more effective than Lane last week. Now Butch gave him more carries yes but his average per carry was less than Lanes.
I didn't get to pay close attention with how the backs played especially while pass blocking or running routes. Did I miss pn how Hurd played better or was the Chatt Times wrong?
Not that it matters but Im wondering if its Hurd performing or Lane losing the atarting role?
Of course with our Oline play Jamaal Lewis couldn't run the ball effectively right now

Hurd hardly ever gets taken down on the first hit and even if someone meets him at the line he seems to always fall forward and earns every yard he gets. To me, Lane hasn't shown enough improvement from year to year to deserve to get more reps than Hurd. Right now we are going off potential where with Lane we already know what we are going to get out of him. I know he's put his due in over his time at UT but the best players have got to play. Period.

He's protected lane from injury and tried to provide some game experience for Hurd before SEC play off IMO

Hurd might be better at playing his position in the offensive scheme than Lane. Now I'm no Marty Mornhinweg but I think Hurd is doing better at picking up blitzes and pass blocking.

If butch goes 5-7 this year his seat deserves to be warm. I have full faith in him but 5-7 means zero progress with coaching has been made. No excuse to not make a bowl.

Butch's seat will not be warm if he goes 5-7. We are way too young with one of the toughest schedules in the country. He is also putting together another strong recruiting class. I hate that we have no patience as a society anymore.

Not quite accurate IMO.
Last year was salvaging what he could with what he had.
New staff for the team, not all the players needed for the schemes, injuries, and inexperienced QBs 2nd half of the season, etc.
This year youth and inexperience, lack of depth, another brutal schedule, some OL deficiencies, etc. Seems to be a recipe for the same to me, but; I see smarter play, aggressiveness, better conditioning and speed, no quitting by players, etc. That's progress and I would expect even better results next year with recruits in critical needs areas.

This. You can tell the team has improved greatly. Baring injuries this OU game is going to be good in the long haul. To keep improving these kids need to play the best teams. You don't become the best by playing Vanderbilt 12 times a season..

Just posted this in other thread on this: YPC leaves out the TD pass and positive yards Hurd had from screens, which was one of the more impressive plays from a RB this year so far.

9/6 Arkansas State

ATT YDS AVG
23 83 3.6 Hurd
13 54 4.2 Lane

Personally they were both effective regardless of the numbers. After watching the off playback video Freak posted, both players results were stymied by some blocking assignments not executed properly.

Hurd had 83 yards rushing. He got 40 of those yards after contact.

Just curious, what's your role on the coaching staff?

I don't know about him,what is yours ?

i did hear that Hurd was pass blocking good, for what that is worth, the running game has not looked good to me yet,Lane hasn't got the ball as much as Hurd,so I have no idea why

don't forget about the need for some quality depth too,CBJ and company are a few years away from right now, hopefully they will keep the recruiting up

Their best tackler and leader Quashan Lee MLB for ASU says Hurd a punishing runner. He went out of the game 3 different times after meeting Hurd Man to Man at LOS. Think he had rib problems before game but it took some punishment from Hurd.

It was a perfectly legitimate post. There was nothing that even remotely suggested he thought he was the coach. This kind of response is just silly (which is the nicest way I can say it). It's a fan's discussion forum for goodness sake. Even if the OP had suggested what he thought the coaches should do (which he didn't), it would be perfectly reasonable for a fan's discussion forum. I come here TO discuss this sort of thing, and I imagine lots of other folks do to.

Back to the OP: I'm with you. I like Hurd, but it sure seems like Lane has been in Butch's doghouse since the day Butch arrived. Certainly nothing he does on the field makes any difference in his number of carries.

Neither Lane or Hurd have impressed so far, and if they have not impressed against our lesser opponents. How will they perform against our SEC opponents and oklahoma?

So far, it is not looking good.

What do you mean "a wash"? If Butch misses a bowl game this year his seat gets warm next year.

I wouldn't consider that a reason to pack it in and call the season "a wash", before he even loses a single game.

Just means he knows he'll most likely go 5-7 or 6-6, with 7-5 at best this year. I don't think they are "packing it in" but he knows they are not challenging for the SEC East this year.

1 way i think Hurd has been more effective, on plays where there is absolutely no hole it seems he can move the pile and always turns what would be a no-gain play into 3 yards. His big body and effort make something out of nothing quite a bit. Seems like Hurd has gotten a lot more carries in obvious running plays as well, against stacked fronts. I really like Lane however and Im proud hes a VFL.

Lane has had better numbers all year but they are giving Hurd the lions share for some reason. I'm ready to see what Derrell Scott can do.

All year? It's 2 games. The staff thinks Hurd is running better and deserves/has earned the carries he's gotten. He has a higher upside, more ability, is more likely to pop one and bust a big run. Seems simple to me. Btw, I'd like to see Scott, too, but not because I'm disappointed with either Hurd or Lane.
