How will all this negative energy surrounding Tennessee basketball affect recruiting?

There's a lot of fans wanting Martin gone, including myself. I had high expectations for this team and I thought this would be our year, but it's turned into a disappointment. When we lose all our players next year, next year will even be a bigger struggle. Question is, as long as Martin is the coach and negative energy continues to surround Tennessee basketball, how bad could this affect recruiting wise? I'm sure the recruits would take notice.

It has to have an impact. Nobody wants to go to a school to possible have a coach they don't know.

Two ways to look at it. High profile players will not seriously consider UT with the uncertainty involved, and b. even if Marcus Smart, Marc Gasol, and Austin Nichols were to come next year, we don't have the coaches to win with them!

It will only cause them to delay commitment to the Vols until we get a good coach onboard.

Sometime you just bit the bullet and sever ties 3 years is enough and please hire someone with alittle excitement in him

it doesn't help.

but, i believe the biggest problem for anyone in the league is that what the sec is to football, they are not in basketball.

why the hell would you want to play basketball at an sec school right now, if you had options to other top programs?

kentucky has overcome this because they are kentucky and florida has a future hall of famer as head coach.

i just think it's an uphill battle to recruit kids to play in this league right now.

that's why, believe it or not, i am rooting for tennessee and a few others to get into the tournament, make some noise in the tournament and raise the profile of the league.

Pearl is a hall of fame coach already

The SEC has always been a one-two team league (Arkansas, Kentucky ect...) but I thought having two teams in the final four would do some good but didn't. We'll always be a football conference. That's why I was excited about conference expansion and the possibility of adding someone like North Carolina or one of the ACC teams. I know its never going to happen but whatever.

I see an Illini logo - They still want Self back -- Those Illinois boosters are rich enough they could have gave him a blank check to stay -- now they constantly lose big name recruits

imo.....

generally, the same geographic advantages that exist for football recruiting exist in basketball.

if georgia signed 3 of the top 10 basketball players in georgia every year, they'd be pretty damn good.

but, i can't explain how south alabama and uab can put basketball teams out there that are better than alabama and auburn half the time. and they are. in a given year, no. but, half of the time, the best team in alabama isn't alabama or auburn.

i think damn near every team in the league has the potential to be better than what they are right now.

football league or not.

That's only because I needed an i to go between the two Ts. I'm not a fan of Illinois.

What kind of question is this? Does anyone think negativity around a program helps recruiting?

Don't know why this warrants even saying, but the biggest factor affecting recruiting is your record.

another thing a lot of the teams have not figured out (not a problem at tennessee though) is that because the league sucks, it helps to go out and schedule quality out of conference games and tournaments that get potential recruits excited.

one of the keys to pearl's success, imo, is they played anyone, anywhere and there were plenty of tv cameras around when they did.

Agree. Cal is a scheduling genious. Donovan has also scheduled a lot of high profile games (The carrier game, even if canceled). Pearl always had a really nice schedule and that was something I was worried about with Martin when he came in.

florida did not always have a great non conference slate, but beefed it up over the last 7 years or so
