Howland out at UCLA

I think that UCLA fanbase and media there overvalued what kind of a coach they had in Howland. I don't care what anyone says 3 Final Fours in 3 years is not a feat very many coaches can achieve. Lavin and Howland were not bad coaches--now I understand that Howland rubbed a lot of people the wrong way (particularly Bill Walton) but it will be interesting to see what guy they target because I really highly doubt Shaka Smart or Brad Stevens would go there---JMO

Hey, if you ain't cheating you ain't trying.

Difference is, UK has performed over a period of 9 decades and 5 coaches (Excluding Sutton & Billy Clyde), we have endurance.

This.

I have no love for UK hoops, but you can't argue against their longevity compared to UCLA's run under Woooden/Gilbert.

Hell, UCLA's last title has plenty of stank on it, thanks to Jim Harrick.

Ucla has performed over 3 diff coaches. Howland, wooden and Harrick.

Also hilarious to see a Kentucky fan talk about cheating.

I don't really follow basketball but didn't Kentucky send a recruit an envelope stuffed with $100 bills?

Well there was rupp and sutton. Rumors on calipari but who really knows.

All schools cheat to a certain extent but this board just really hates wooden.

Lavin is a bad coach. He and Howland don't belong in the same sentence.

That's because he spent his career getting dominated by Pete Newell before Gilbert started buying him NBA teams.

It's not a hatred of Wooden, moreso an acknowledgement that Wooden benefited from the "generosity" of Sam Gilbert.

Doesn't mean he wasn't a good coach. People acknowledged he new Gilbert but didn't like him it want players around him.

Wooden was a very good coach, he just so happened to reap the benefits of a booster delivering the nation's best players to his doorstep.

There was a blatant double standard back then with regard to who the NCAA went after. UCLA was a sacred cow, and Gilbert's generosity was the worst kept secret in Los Angeles.

"UCLA players were so well taken care of -- far beyond the ground rules of the NCAA -- that even players from poor backgrounds never left UCLA prematurely (for pro basketball) during John Wooden's championship years," Walton said. "If the UCLA teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were subjected to the kind of scrutiny Jerry Tarkanian and his players have been, UCLA would probably have to forfeit about eight national championships and be on probation for the next 100 years."

- Bill Walton

I'm not arguing shady stuff wasn't happening. Just saying wooden and Gilbert weren't close and wooden didnt like the guy.

Every coach benefits from a shady booster but people act as if wooden sought Gilbert out. He obviously benefited from it but people act as if it's a black and white situation and it's not.

The thread when he died was terrible. The vitriol was surprising.

Also who ever said that ucla basketball isn't big in so cal has never been here. Nobody cares about the clippers. Ucla is just such a nightmare to get to and they played home games at like 6 this year.
