The banner was a gift from Gaylord Hotels. It wasnt specially made to go along with a hanging ceremony.
Let's say that the weird end-of-the-game thing hadn't happened and Tennessee had won the Music City Bowl in December. You think Gaylord Hotels would have offered us a giant four-story banner to hang on the outside of Neyland? If they had, how long do you think it would have taken our AD to stop laughing about it?
Probably the same amount of time it took Summitt to stop laughing at the elite 8 banner. UK didnt celebrate it, nor did they have a ceremony for it. It just appeared, and many are not happy about it.
One is kind of lame, but the other is truly pathetic.
I can point to other schools who have hung banners for making the Elite Eight. Can you point to any other schools that have draped their stadium with giant banners celebrating third-tier bowl wins?
UL, USC....to start.
Can you think of an SEC program or a respectable school, other than UT, that throws ceremonies to hang elite 8 banners?
The Elite 8 is a big deal. Especially for a non-traditional basketball school like Tennessee. Kentucky is top 3 all time historically, so your judgment is skewed based on your team's success. Quit being so pompous about it and learn to act like you've been there.
Eh, I don't know. Most of their championships came before black kids were allowed to play. That's like saying Italy's an all time top 3 country based on the Roman Empire.
Sounds like UT's football program...dont they claim titles all the way back to the 1930's? Thats kind of funny, I'll have to look that up one day.
The difference is that we don't make any dumb claims about being the top team in college football history. Meanwhile, you guys still beat your chests about being #1 in basketball while other teams have just blown right by you.
You guys need to have a statue of Louisville's head coach outside your arena, because if it weren't for him, you wouldn't have won anything in the modern era.
Where did I say UK was the top basketball program? I thought we were discussing your claim that UK has a good majority of titles pre-1960, even though UT football has plenty...even some that date back to the 1930's. That kind of made me laugh, thanks! But since you'd like to bring it up, ESPN and every other sports writer has put UK at either #1 or #2 of greatest basketball programs. I guess they dont have a clue, eh?
What programs have passed UK up? UCLA is still #1, UK is still #2. So UK didnt win a title in the last decade, so what. They did more in just the 90's than any program in the SEC has done in its history. And you're right, Pitino was great when he was at UK. Its a shame he left when he was on fire.
Uh, that's like bragging that you get more action with chicks than anybody else in church camp. You play in a football conference.
UNC and Duke have both blown far past UK in terms of the quality of their program. Sparty is better. All UK is now is a has-been ancient power who's had to resort to overpaying a known cheater in a desperate attempt to regain the glory they earned back in the all-whitey days.
