Hurricane Ike and Its Impact on Coastal Texas

I rode out Hurricane Andrew cowering under the stairs in my condo. Never again will I look at a hurricane as a romantic idea and fun life experience. The devastation afterward affected me probably more than any single life event. The best to all those affected.

That couldn't have been an easy one to have to ride out, either.

Fox this afternoon was showing a group of folks planning on riding it out at a Galveston beachside bar. They were being warned to get out but seemed to drunk to care.

So is Ike going to make it to a Cat 3?

I would say that it will....it has been getting better organized all night long...we'll get another update in 10 minutes or so. The winds shouldn't be that big of an issue, though....even if it becomes a 3....it's right on the line so it's really just a difference in name only at this point.

They may end up OK, despite the not-so-smart decision...Ike has taken a few jogs to the north and looks to be dead-centered on Galveston Bay now..which will help the surge on Galveston a lot...but they're still going to get nailed, and it could always take a jog back west.

TT. I agree, I don't really think the wind will be the big event, but the surge that comes with this monster is what I would worry about.

They are saying now that 40% of Galveston Island did not evacuate. Could be a long night.

It is growing. It's called something like near-shore convective blowup or something like that. Whatever it is, it looks scary. The storm is certainly getting its feet under itself. The latest SLOSH model that forecasts storm surge shows the following maximum predicted surges....notice that it predicts Port Arthur is going to be seriously slammed...with less significant surge for Galveston and Galveston Bay. That would be great news for Galveston...but the latest wobbles seem to be taking this storm more west than northwest which would bring those numbers at Port Arthur back down toward Galveston...the next few hours are going to be critical for the people on that island....we'll see what track it takes....

Galveston is catching at least one break...there is a large area of dry air working into the north-eastern side of the storm...which may help alleviate the surge as the eye-wall comes ashore over the next hour...I don't know if it is calm in that pocket or not...if it is, they'll almost feel like they go through 2 eyes....and that would be very lucky for them....but it may be dry but with high winds...I don't know.

TT. You need to get a job at the Weather Channel, to hell with that Global Warming crap. Your one smart cookie. :) Just messing with ya, that's some good info.

Still, TT, when is the WORST supposed to hit Galveston, and then when is the WORST expected to hit Houston?

I've changed my mind. This won't be as bad as the mainstream media is saying.

I don't think that we'll really know until about 4 more hours. If you're talking about impact on gas...then I think you're right. We won't run out of gas ... but prices will climb with 20% less supply.

So, I've been flipping over to Fox News some because Geraldo was getting some good shots...but that Shephard guy is an ABSOLUTE IDIOT. That area of dry air that wrapped up into the northeast quadrant of the storm is passing onto Galveston island right now...but that IS NOT the eye-wall. Shephard was saying..."viewers are calling in saying that this is not the eye-wall...well, they ARE WRONG"...umm...sorry..you're wrong buddy. The eye-wall is still about 2 or 3 hours away from landfall on Galveston. If that happens on on the southwestern edge of Galveston island...then look out. If it happens closer to Galveston Bay's mouth...then things might not be so bad around Houston. Port Arthur would get slammed though - and there are a lot of refineries up there too.

Edit: The dry pocket will probably wrap around to the western or southern edge by the time the eye-wall comes ashore....being filled in with the stronger convection that is not on the south and southeastern side....so Galveston still has a lot of fight to put up tonight.

That northern side is already starting to fill in...I hope that Fox news guy sees how much of an idiot he is now....I mean, you can get something wrong - but the arrogance it takes to scream to millions of viewers that they're wrong like that tells me all I need to know about the guy. Oh well...they're doing a better job of live coverage than CNN, so I'll watch it - even though he is wrong :).

The radar is now really telling how much more crap Galveston is going to have to go through before the eye comes ashore.
