Hurricane Matthew Discussion

Add my dad to the list of idiots. He lives adjacent to I95 in Daytona, but is riding out the storm at his girlfriends on the 19th floor of beach front high rise.

Hunker down in the interior bathroom or hallway corridor I guess. Those windows will blow out quickly.

Seriously, if you live where the hurricane is coming: Get in your car and drive away. It's 'bout to git real.

People deciding to stay may be because the media has cried wolf too many times for ratings.

I saw the Old Testament type destruction of Hurricane Katrina first hand and that is not something to mess with.

A friend of mine's son was at Charity when Katrina hit. He survived the hurricane, but didn't survive his illness. Not sure where his mom is now. Don't know how she survived that with Hunter.

Hopefully it doesn't get too crazy here. It shouldn't be as bad as Florida but I'm also on call for an emergency, so we'll see. I'm busting out the ole Strat-o-Matic for the power outage though!

My sister and a friend of hers were both medical personnel at Charity. My sister's friend elected to take her shift and stayed during the storm while my sister was lucky enough to drive back up here to Knoxville. The drive from K-Town to NOLA is typically 9 hours. My sister got stuck in the fleeing traffic and it took her 12 hours to go maybe half the trip. I think she somehow managed to get a hotel room somewhere in Alabama. My aunt and uncle on my dad's side lived in the 9th ward. They were hardcore, stubborn, New Orleanians and insisted on staying. We called them multiple times trying to get them to leave. They had nowhere to go and no real money to spend(just another stubborn excuse) as I'm pretty sure my dad offered to wire them money. We told them to go to the hospital and tell them you are having chest pains(even if they weren't), they refused. Later that night while they were in their house the levee broke and they didn't make it.

So far all good. Storm down graded to a 3. Winds and rain starting to pick up now. It was actually pretty quiet here all night. Live on the east side of Orlando.

Not to turn this into a political discussion, but it's been pointed out that the wind gusts reported by the NOAA don't match up with what was recorded in Nassau in the Bahamas. Speculation that our government exxagerated the strength of this storm to use peoples' fear to support climate change initiatives.

Looks like that little jog to the right will keep it from making landfall.

You guys are probably scheduled to get some downpours and gusty winds? Nothing too bad I would think/hope.

?

Saw they had 145+ gusts in Nassau. Highest I've seen in the states is a 102mph gust at Cape Canaveral.

Probably true. I'm watching the news and they keep talking about 100mph winds..

Yet when I look at the weather radar we use here at work (FAA) I don't see anything more than 50mph...anywhere in the hurricane.

My parents live in Volusia County. They lost power a couple hours ago. Lots of limbs and some trees down.
