Hyatt opts out of Orange bowl - headed to NFL

Business decision is not quitting on your team, what the heck you think college football is and always has been , it’s a business.
This is just business is a bunch of BS. It's simply an excuse to renege on a commitment. The fact that you and others keep using that as a justification says a lot about your character. It's just to easy to walk away these days. And yes people still do judge a person based on character.

In this case, quitting isn't a bad thing. When people declare for the draft early, they are "quitting on their team". When people leave their starter job for a better job, they are "quitting on their team." Same thing here. He's got a multi-million dollar lottery ticket in his hand, no point in dancing around by a bonfire with it before cashing it in.

Fair point about declaring early, though I will say that at least gives your team a year (not weeks) to develop your replacement. I don't think the job analogy is a fair one, unless you signed up for a time commitment and then bailed on it for something better.

Yes, he's making a decision here that is great for him and bad for his teammates. There's no arguing that.

Explain how he didn't quit on his team.

I'm not even saying it was a bad decision, he'll probably see no consequences from it. The only people it will affect negatively are his teammates, who he quit on.
😂 it’s so absurd seeing this from some fans.

How many teammates and staff do you think told him to go pro when he asked them? How many do you think have encouraged him after learning he’s going pro?

You're clearly trying to insult him over it. It's really not a good take and I'd be shocked if his teammates aren't thrilled for him. There's nothing wrong with securing the future for yourself and your family and doing everything you can to protect it. It's not bad for his teammates. It's good for others who get to play in the exhibition game that non-playoff bowls are. That playing time might have been limited otherwise. They are getting more practice reps. More experience. A chance to perform in game conditions that may greatly help them next season. Hyatt wasn't back next season barring some multi-million dollar super NiL deal anyway. Let the new guys get the valuable experience.

Everyone championing this "smart decision", you are, of course, more than welcome to swoon over the dagger that is slowly murdering college football, but I love the sport too much to do that.

Think of your all-time college football legends. Your Mannings and Tebows, think as recently as Jennings... hell was going to freeze over before those guys ever "opted out" of a game to focus on themselves. That's all that needs to be said.

Thank goodness we had a high character guy like you to repeatedly point that out.

Cmon Nancy.... he has an opportunity to follow HIS dream. He absolutely should do that and he his filled his commitment to UT and his teammates. Scholarships are year by year basis. You can not fault a kid for taking his shot. There is no difference between Hyatt or Tillman. Hyatt has the benefit of being healthy and a full season of work. I say good luck to the young man and his family
That's your opinion. He's walking away from his commitment to the team and his university. It says a lot about his character and yes some people do still judge a person by their character.

Want kids to keep playing then make the playoffs bigger. PERIOD. Kids have been opting out of these bowl games for a long long long time. They just used to tell the media that they were nursing a soreness. At least they are real about it now. Next man up.

Truth is by the end of a season; they are all banged up. When the CFP goes to 12 teams; there will be even more opt outs. There has to be some sort of incentive to keep them engaged.

If people can't be honest about what this is - which, the definition of quitting is "to stop doing something" - then people can't really make the situation any better.

Tennessee has a football game to play against one of two or three best college football programs of the past decade, even if it is a "glorified exhibition," and Hyatt isn't going to suit up for it. You can be fine with it, say it's a good decision for him, and really, who would argue with it being in his own best interests? No one's going to argue that it protects him and maximizes his chances in the NFL Draft.

But it does mean he's choosing not to compete with his team for that game, and it does put Tennessee at a disadvantage in that game. The team that went 10-2 is not going to be playing against Clemson - only a part of it. A team is a group of people that "work toward a common goal," and Hyatt won't be doing that.

Those two things can be simultaneously true.

Of course it's a business decision.

He's making a business decision by doing... what exactly?

By quitting on his team.

And you’re upset that something that’s a hobby for you is being affected by someones livelihood. I’m proud of him for going back at it after stepping on that refs foot in the rain in Athens. There’s a reason that there is a big push for school or NIL to provide one game insurance policies. That way if a player tears his ACL in a bowl game they don’t lose their future. Until then this is what we have. If it bothers you, offer him 10 million of your money to play.

You should be thanking him and the fact that your trying to insult him says more about your character than anything else.
K.

So when in your opinion is Hyatt allowed to go pro and still be of high character? Is he allowed after the Orange Bowl that literally means nothing win or lose to this program? Or does he need to complete his senior season as well? When would it not be “betraying” his teammates and coaches (the vast majority of which who have told him to go pro)?

People on here that say he’s quitting on his team is BS. If you had a opportunity to make millions of dollars vs tens to hundred thousands of dollars that’s a no brainer. That’s not quitting that’s being smart. If your willing to pay him nfl money to play in this irrelevant bowl then give him a call. Unless your in the playoff this is just a glorified scrimmage with a trophy at the end, this just allows younger players to step up and carry the torch.
Go Vols!!!! Beat Clemsons’ arsss.
He just saw what happened to Tillman and because of that we are losing both now with Hyatt stepping up and then he saw Hendon go down and he won't be able to play till August missing out on so much I can't blame the kid. If he was my kid he would do the same.

Certainly, I wish this young man all the best and success in the future.

That being said, something I taught my children is that if you start something, you see it through. You don't quit, because you are quitting on your teammates. I do not like that any player "opts out" of a game.

Furthermore, if you want to be *VOL FOR LIFE* , how can you be if you decide you are not going to be a Vol when it is not convenient.

Okay, start shooting arrows at me!

It says hes smart not to risk playing in the orange bowl vs getting ready for the draft. I am sure Heupel and his team mates support his decision. Your opinion means about as much as mine in the grand scheme. I would say Squirrel is preparing, Keyton and Bru. And honestly no one has a leg to stand on if the same people are not upset with Tillman. He has been checked out for a long while

I understand his decision and the others but something needs to be done to solidify this situation. Doesn't make sense to have these bowl games without the potential NFL players.

That’s why they’re talki about implementing one game insurance policies covered by NIL.

Would be a great step in the right direction at the very least for playoffs. We beat kids to death with the statement to make the best decision for their future then we complain about when they do.
