It could have, and it might have; they were down 3 at the time, and it is much easier to drive into FG range than get the TD. Expect Michigan to run it into the line 3 times. The difference was, in that situation, you've gifted them a FG and a 6 pt advantage.

I still think it was the wrong call.

I understand what you're trying to say... but they still didn't even get to FG range when they got the ball back, so that call didn't hurt. Had they ended the game at the 30 on 4th down, b/c they needed a TD instead of a FG to tie, I would probably agree with you.
