I Applaud this Statement by Obama

you mean except that Al-Qaeda is cheering for them?

Yeah, that's nice isn't it.

I think we should just kinda walk away from the ME, leave the light on, shut the door, and let what happens happen.

You would think we'd learn. But nooooooooo.

We just keep arming people and training them.

Anybody got a timeline for when this is going to come back to bite us?

2025.

In a way, this is kind of nostalgic. North Africa and the Barbary Coast is where our navy first cut it's teeth and formed it's identity as a unit.

I agree. The problem is there's no clear good/bad option over there. I believe it was said earlier but WW2 may have been the last time that was truly defined

Well we are the ones who assisted and trained the Taliban in the 80s. Looks like we are willing to make the same mistake twice.

well you've seen the reports on US test scores so it's no surprise we fail history too

Yeah, I said WW2 was the last war I believe we should have been in. I know most people on here feel that way though.

I just feel that if there is no good/bad option we should stay out of it. I personally (if I was the commander in chief or high ranking military official) would like to be able to look a dead soldier's mother in the eyes and honestly tell her that her son or daughter died for a great cause. If you can't do that, you don't EVER EVER need to have a US soldier in harms way.

why?

And do you mean bombing them or actually deploying troops on the ground. I kinda view those differently.

both. we were attacked. al queda had a stronghold there and training facilities. those actions hurt their power significantly.

I would have done stealth bombers in the night on all air bases and known living quarters of government leaders. I then would have went live the following day explaining why I dropped bombs and that if we get any info that there is still training going on within the country we will do bombers in the night again. I have no problem dropping bombs on a country at random periods of time throughout the year until we obtain or objective.

Good luck finding those air bases.

Afghanistan has little for you to bomb, that was a big part of the problem. You'd be bombing tents and using multi-million dollar bunker busters and fuel-air bombs on caves. You're swatting an ant hill with a rolled up newspaper, as one general put it.

I'm not talking about the Taliban. I'm talking the government leaders. They dont live in caves. They live in palaces.

First Iraq war was justifiable IMHO but needed clarity on mission end.

Afghanistan likewise.

I was mildly supportive of Iraq II based on notion of WMD and circumstances but in hindsight see what a mistake it was.

I think every major war we've engaged in could have and should have been avoided. Japan would have never bombed us at Pearl Harbor had we traded with them. We picked a side and we made an enemy. Whether or not we should have intervened in WWII regardless of Pearl Harbor is another issue (which I think we should let the Eastern Hemisphere fight their own battles).

WWI, the Lusitania was shipping arms and probably isn't justification for sending tens of thousands of American soldiers do their deaths, regardless.

Afghanistan would have never happened had 9/11 never happened and 9/11 would have never happened had we never mettled in the Middle East.

George Washington warned us that we should keep to ourselves. We didn't listen for very long.
