Vols best returners:
Evan Berry (statistically)
Willie Gault (statistically)
Leonard Scott (statistically)
David Oku (statistically)

The eye test:
Willie Gault
Dale Carter
Evan Berry
David Oku
Cordarrelle Patterson

I don’t remember any of them scoring that many times. Peerless Price and Dee Williams could get everyone’s attention too.

I’m too young to have watched Willie Gault at under 45.

Oh, the horror. If he were as good as you and some others say here, he would have found a place in the NFL.
What the hell?? He was one of, if not the fastest guy on the team. He set state records in track in high school. The kid was clearly dynamic with the ball in his hands, as we all saw it. I swear to God, some of you just live to play the role of the contrarion on here, no matter how obvious something is. I don't give two $hits what the NFL thought of him, I know what I saw, and so did everyone else here who watched him play. He could've been a weapon on offense if properly utilized.

Had they not phased him out over time, I think Pickens would have been right there with Gault. He had 600 KR yards as a freshman.

I wonder if he's the only Vol ever with a pick 6 TD, receiving TD, KR TD and PR TD in a career?

More times than not, field position wins games. How many of their returns led to touchdown drives, field goals, game winning field goals, or just simply flipping the field around in tight games where field position was the difference maker? We'll never know

Probably. Did he ever have a rushing TD? End around, reverse, or HBack type rush?

We had a lot of playmakers on that team.

As someone who has coached, or helped coach my sons football team since he was in the second grade, I can tell you going into 7th grade kick returns this fall worries the the hell out of me.

Puberty creates such a massive disparity between the boys. There are kids half my sons size and twice his size…and they either want to kill each other or are scared to death when kick off rolls around. It’s exciting, but until you’ve done it don’t pretend you know how dangerous it is or isn’t.

I played 9 years with a 2 bar facemask helmet with webbing and about 1/8 inch thick… I played 9 years with a 2 facemask bar about I webbing….I was playing at the bar with 9 helmets…
I never had a contushion
Played in the 60s and early 70s with a with a 2 bar with a U bar over my nose and the old suspension helmets and I was a blocking back/fullback...I never got a concussion. The helmets back then were like wearing a milk bucket on your head... I got broke bones but never a concussion playing football.

With those less than great helmets we were taught how to tackle and how not to use your head....we practiced it. As helmet's evolved it became used as a weapon....And kids tried to make the highlight reels with their knockout hits. My old football coach said later in his life before he died...'If they want to take their heads out of the game take the facemasks off.' He played in the SEC before facemasks.

The data, while not fully conclusive but certainly worrisome, suggests that a decent percentage of athletes that die young already have the beginnings of CTE. It's early data, and thankfully the pool is relatively small of young athletes who die young

CTE is an issue. Data likely will suggest that hard head contact at a young age carries some risks..... any hard contact carries risk, though, so gaging how much and how serious is the question.

Parents should be able to make an informed decision not just based on anecdotal "I played and never had a problem......" but on sad studies like this of athletes who died young.

CP was ridiculous. It's a shame that offense was that good and had an idiot HC and DC.

Sounds familiar… single wing?

Closest I ever came to a concussion was when Larry Satterfield blind sided me when he played at Lanier High School in the early 70s. My ears were ringing for about 3 plays. Terrible helmets back in those days...

I remember that I was standing next to Gault at a pep rally in the presidential courtyard in the fall of 82 and didn’t know it until it was about over, when one of the guys he was there with said something to him.
