We pretty much only played Bru, Keyton, and White last night. You would think with Tillman and Hyatt out - at least Walker Merrill would have played some. I don’t understand why at a start of a series if a couple more receivers get snaps. At some point this will hurt our WR recruiting if only 3 play per game.

This was a bowl game. You play your best players at each position. Moreover, one game does not advertise how a coach may incorporate new recruits into the scheme.
But I get it.

Our depth was extremely thin at WR with Hyatt and Tilman out and Calloway and Holliday transferring out. So rotating guys in probably wasn't the best option.

We're not as deep as you think. If Merrill wasn't in the rotation it was the right decision. This wasn't a just get guys some snaps game. I think I saw him on special teams.

You can't blame it on the fact that it was a bowl game. This has been Heups MO since day one.

It is one of the weird things about our offense. Look at how well Keyton played when Tillman was out. Tillman comes back and Keyton hardly played a down for, what 3 games or so. Maybe being down 2 receivers the coaches didn't have much confidence in the backups, but we do like to stick with the same trio all game. The good news is that our starters were good last night--it's a nice group. Squirrel White is impressive--I think he can improve his route running a bit--but he's going to be good, and Keyton and McCoy are already solid/good.

As opposed to that revolving door methodology under Azzani and Butch? If you’re an elite WR recruit, you see a system that allows it’s best to get in game rhythm and bust big plays. Josh Malone is a multiple time 1,000+ yard receiver in this scheme.

How do you sub when you snap the ball so quickly? Guess if you take White out and put Merrill in he'd have to play the whole drive I guess?

I don't understand why Dee Williams does not get a shot. The man has speed and is very tough to bring down? He is listed as a DB but never see him on the field in this position either.

Our offense is uptempo and you can't switch out players period. You don't see it at other positions either except with injury. RB, DL, and LB are the only ones who do but it's a necessity to keep fresh bodies there. When they do switch you have to run a whole series with the backup and there is a big drop off from McCoy, White, and Keyton down to Merrill.

The rotation worked just fine. We won and all of the WRs played well.

We had a guy win the Biletnikoff Award. Another WR barely played and will be a high NFL draft pick. We set program record in points and yards. I believe WR recruiting will not be an issue.

I understand what the OP is saying. I think Merrill should have gotten a series or two in. If a good receiver doesn't play, that is reason for the transfer portal.

Hard to build quality depth if the 2nd's don't get playing time. Also hard to recruit quality players with this scheme.
