I don’t get our lack of a WR rotation

Pretty much every team does the same thing. You want your best players on the field. We also didn't run that many plays this game and it was all of the skill players first real game starting together.

We pretty much only played Bru, Keyton, and White last night. You would think with Tillman and Hyatt out - at least Walker Merrill would have played some. I don’t understand why at a start of a series if a couple more receivers get snaps. At some point this will hurt our WR recruiting if only 3 play per game.
Yea that’s all we need and prob all that can handle it right now… this is a non issue

Well if we sub, then we have to let the defense sub which slows us down plus it allows them to have fresh legs on D. Kinda goes against our philosophy.

True. I was wondering where the TEs were in the passing game. I expect the TEs to be a bigger weapon in the next few years.

Lack of rotation= lack of capable depth? Maybe the backups aren't good enough/ready? This isn't pee wee leagues where everyone gets to play. This is the SEC. You earn reps or you sit. There's a reason starters start and reserves watch. Just because they wear a jersey doesn't mean they're gonna play.

Yeah, when you play hurry up and run a lot of option routes, you shouldn’t sub. That’s been the case all year.

Last night we had 2 opt outs and 2 guys already in the portal. So we had Soph Merrill and a few true freshmen.

If you did, then you would have relatively low experience at QB and very low experience at WR... higher chances for mistakes.

It is one of the weird things about our offense. Look at how well Keyton played when Tillman was out. Tillman comes back and Keyton hardly played a down for, what 3 games or so. Maybe being down 2 receivers the coaches didn't have much confidence in the backups, but we do like to stick with the same trio all game. The good news is that our starters were good last night--it's a nice group. Squirrel White is impressive--I think he can improve his route running a bit--but he's going to be good, and Keyton and McCoy are already solid/good.

What did you see on his route running that needs improved, just curious.

I don't understand why Dee Williams does not get a shot. The man has speed and is very tough to bring down? He is listed as a DB but never see him on the field in this position either.
Everything you say about Williams is true. Therefore, there is a reason, and whatever the reason, it's to the team's benefit.

I like continuity at Wr. Years ago we rotated a bunch of them and never got in any sync or rythmn. We did what we should have done this game. Especially with our other receivers out of this game. GBO!

Thats probably correct, but I mean as a defensive back if he could not get on the field this season I doubt he ever will. The needs in the secondary were way past "next man up"!

Beyond the normal (much cited here) reasons we seldom sub receivers, Clemson had weeks to prepare all sorts of wrinkles or trick coverages to force interceptions. Under those conditions, the continuity of the same receivers seeing what their DBs are doing, and which cuts or routes a given DB responds to, or doesn't play as tightly, becomes even more valuable.

it’s about substituting, we don’t sub because it would allow other teams to sub.

Walker is the next guy up though this year. Right now it will depend on which WRs put in the work with Milton during the off-season. I am hoping in this group there is another Hyatt that spends the offseason putting in the work.

It may be that his mental skillset is strongest on reading opportunities in space and reacting to capitalize on them. The demands at defensive back are different, protecting space rather than capitalizing on it.

Also, brains that are great in reaction are often not as efficient when tasked to be pro-active. That's long been one of the criticisms of many video games--they reward quicker reaction times, but in so doing they effectively re-wire the brain (especially undeveloped, adolescent brains) to become more impulsive.

Drives weren’t very long. 3 & outs or quick scores. Plus Heupel doesn’t slow down to get replacements in.

Coaches have a good feel for which receivers currently have a good connection with the quarterback. That anticipation of what the other one is about to do takes time to develop. I am sure Heup took that into consideration

It wasn't "recruiting" quality players that made our receivers, it was coaching the average player and getting transfers in and coaching them up.

How many 4 and 5* recruits have we gotten out of the high school ranks in past 3 years?
About 26 according to 247.

Yeah… it’s the scheme. The scheme that led UT to its winningest season in 20+ years is why they’re not swimming in a sea of 5 stars. It has nothing to do with the fact Tennessee has been horrible since those recruits were born, it’s because they don’t sub enough. Yeah, that’s it. You’re a damn genius.

If Tennessee only rotated their receivers, it would erase 2 decades of administrative incompetence and the Vols would sign the #1 class no problem, ez as pie. That’s how you build depth people, by making sure everybody gets a turn regardless of who is actually making the damn plays.

What a sourpuss. Somebody states an opinion and you call them names.

You must be a really likeable teenager since the 2 months you've been on here.

How much WR rotation in that somewhat slower Ohio State scheme? Honest question.

Okay genious.

FYI UT has recruited 9 receivers in past 3 years. 6 recruits 3* and 3 recruits 4*

2023 recruited 2 3*
2022 recruited 3 3* and 1 4*
2021 recruited 1 3* and 2 4*

This isn't quite the 26 recruits according to your "research"

We haven’t subbed much all year. As a result, one of our WRs won the Biletnikoff Award for best WR in college football. The best 4 guys play and play a lot. I like it

Do WRs really play that much in CJH’s system? We usually don’t have the ball that long each game? I’m sure we have it so little they aren’t even tired at the end of the game.

I thought we’d have a huge rotation at receiver when Heupel was hired. The way I’ve seen it explained he only wants his best on the field at all times in case a premier receiver can break one hence Tillman/Hyatt.If it were a freshman or someone with leaser talent it may just be a catch. He likes to go for the jugular at all times

Our depth was extremely thin at WR with Hyatt and Tilman out and Calloway and Holliday transferring out. So rotating guys in probably wasn't the best option.
It has nothing to do with that.

We rarely rotate offensive players.
