“[Dave Hart and I] talked very frankly about it,” Dooley said. “He told me he had not made a decision if we go 6-6, despite what all the reports are. Either the sources are wrong or Dave wasn’t being forthright with me and I have no reason to think Dave is not being forthright with me. He is an honest man, he has always been honest with me and I have appreciated how he has handled everything about this. I really have.”

So apparently Hart and Dooley had a frank discussion about his future, and Hart told him that he hasnt made a decision "if we go 6-6". So if we have great game against Vandy and Kentucky, go to a bowl, then the decision process moves to after the bowl before a decision is made? That tells me that #1, DD knows another loss and its over, and #2 keep winning and we will see. If in fact, as some here have suggested, that the decision has already been made, why wouldn't he just be honest and tell him? It all looks bad now, we have reports from sources for weeks now saying it's a done deal, media reporting that DD has been fired, now DD saying he has talked to the AD and has been assured that no decision has been made...IMO makes Hart look dishonest and shady, and if it is true that a decision hasn't been made, makes me wonder what Hart is waiting on and if he really feels like DD deserves another season. What am i missing? Is something wrong at this point telling DD that we will be parting ways after the season so that we can begin moving forward with a "search"? OR, is it true that a decision hasnt been made yet and that DD may very well be the HFCATUTK next season.

It is interesting for sure. My translation is that hart told DD on Sunday::

"I am strongly considering making a change and I will have no choice if we don't make a bowl game. As you know I have serious pressure from a lot of angles but I assure you I will keep you if I can if you make a bowl but that decision hasn't been made yet"

Hart setting the ground work and passing the buck while relieving some of the guilt he might have going forward.

I found this interesting. Dooley is responsible for 10% of our losses in a 80 year span in the sec.

He is done. But Hart doesn't want to hurt our chances at the Bowl money, as slim as those chances are. It will not be announced after we lose to Vandy either. This will be done at the seasons end. Which for us will be after Kentucky game

I dont believe that "he has known for a while"...why not give the standard answer that "Im not worrying about that right now, what ever happens happens, im trying to concentrate on winning a football game"...maybe some of you guys are right, that he has known for a while, but i dont think so. Theres alot of things that doesnt make sense to me about this whole thing, and i realize that there could be alot going on behind the scenes and im sure there are, and maybe once everything is said and done it will make more sense. Ive spent many hours over in the JG thread, and im hopeful just like everyone else is. I dont see us going to Vandy and beating them, too many distractions for us, too much motivation for them...and we can play a good game and still find a way to lose, so after Saturday things may become more public. Im just tossing things around in my head this morning and still have alot of questions and concerns.

No worries Dooley. Feel safe. Go coach another stellar game. Then on the following Monday he gets an invite to have lunch with Hart. Pink slip Monday. Game, set, match.

Dooley may not be the greatest coach, but any coach would have struggled coming into the situation after Kiffin. In how many of those losses was Tennessee the favorite to win? I can remember three. Kentucky, Florida, and Missouri. What was the spread on those games? According to Vegas, looks like he hasn't underachieved as much as even Kiffin as USC.

It sounds like Hart is telling Dooley that if you so 6-6 at the end of the season we will talk about your future. Let's not kid ourselves, the athletics dept. is ran like a business and Hart is not the one pulling the strings. Like the coach it goes all the way to the top.

Well, in the end, things may work out great and we get the answer to the "Whys and hows"...but for now, it seems to be turning into a circus, and involving our players...say what you want, but IMO this is just not being handeled very well when we have players stuck in the middle. I know some of you dont care for Wiedmer at the TFP, but this is a nice little read too with some interesting stuff: Wiedmer: Derek Dooley saga continues though sequel not likely | timesfreepress.com

Yeah, we weren't the favorite in more games because Vegas knows Dooley is a horrible coach too. Such a dumb argument. Being favored isn't a sign of who has the most talent or who inherited a tough situation. It has to do with whether gambling guys think you can win. And having a coach who is a known loser figures in to that.

Hart wants the team focused on making the lowest tier bowl possible for the extra money...He doesn't want to distract the team from that goal...Of course after Kentucky win or lose Dooley will be cut loose but at least they will be in the bowl if they win out...It bugs me I have to put "IF" after saying they play Vandy and UK.....Damn how the mighty have fallen....Anybody feel like defending Dooley right now?..lol

If you were Dave Hart, how would you play it?

As an outsider, fire his arsch. If you are the man on the inside, you have all the variables in play. If he hasn't fired him to date it can only be one of two reason. One is he's Hamilton 2.0. Two is he factors working behind the scenes that have to play out before an announcement is made. I hope and pray for option 2.

The only problem is Dooley is in the SEC. He will be expected to win year in and out against the same coaches and teams. It is amazing how far the expectations of Tennessee has fallen in so little time. It wasn't a few years back that the Vols was a threat for the SEC title.

Don't think the team is focused with Dooley there. Too much outside pressure. If he's waiting there's something else in play.

Im not in the AD position, and not privey to all of the things going on behind the scenes, so i cant answer the "What would you do?" But i am saying that from the outside perspective, and from what we can see and hear, it doesnt look good. if you ask "What would you like to see happen?" I am ok with giving CDD this season, but after losing to Kentucky last year, he would know the hook will be quick. im ok with not making a decision until after the season if we had ended up winning the last 4 games (Though at that point he still should have been fired), but after the dibacle vs. Mizz, i would like to have been told yesterday that DD will coach out the remainder of the season and an official search is underway. I dont see the problem with that, and it takes away any confusion, and doesnt make Hart appear to be telling DD one thing and doing a coaching search behind his back. We wouldnt have fans and media going crazy with speculation, players feeling like they are stuck in the middle and any prospective coach wondering if he can trust our AD or not.
