I have a question for some of the Political forum regulars....

It is an Aramaic transliteration. It means wealth/greed/avarice personified. In context, it means worshipping material wealth as a god/idol.

huh. That's a new one on me. The concept I am well aware of, but the actual term never crossed my radar. Cool, thanks.

Not trying to offend you but I thought you said once that you knew a good bit about the Bible? This word is something most young Sunday School attendees would be familiar with.

I don't major on Osteen or really any of the other televangelist types. Generally speaking, I advise people to avoid them. OTOH, the NT clearly commands us to be critical and stedfast against false teaching. Almost all of the TV preachers have serious theological problems and teach error.

If you are going to view TV religious celebrities then the lifestyle of the leader should be evaluated carefully. Christ died owning only a coat. Paul lived an austere lifestyle. I don't think there's a single NT example of a church leader living above the congregation they served. When church leaders since have done so, they have almost invariably served mammon rather than God.

I wasn't referring to being critical of false teaching. It was more in the line of non-believers or new believers judging the faith based on these people - using them as an example and therefore excuse to disavow Christianity altogether.

I think a lot of churches would do themselves a service if they returned to a more Apostolic Age understanding and practice. But to each his own.

I'm much more familiar with it than I would like to be. I went to Sunday School my entire childhood and that term never came up. The concept obviously did many times.

I pretty much was at church every time the doors opened as a kid, and I don't recall ever learning that word until college. I had always heard wealth or money.

Guess Southern Baptists aren't as knowledgable as Independent Baptists.

I wouldn't make that generalization by any stretch.

Probably just a novelty of my particular experiences.

Most people don't realize that all new believers only know the "Milk" of the Word. (You can add those that don't know Him here also to a degree.) What they don't understand, is that there is also "Meat" to the Word. They don't understand that like a baby, a person must be weened off of the milk and into the Meat of the Word. Which takes maturity in the Word and study. Its a hard concept for them, IMHO, thats why they think they know and understand the Bible and it's teachings.

I had a "drug" problem growing up also.

Not necessarily SBC. It's specific churches themselves. It's a huge problem with churches just teaching "Bible stories" and not substance. Most Christians cannot defend their faith based on specifics but can tell you all about the coat of many colors, David and Goliath, Moses in the Nile, etc.

If you like stats read some of George Barna's polling results. It's actually quite scary.

Well, that was just growing up. No longer SBC.

Sounds delicious. It also sounds like, "you don't truly know, until you KNOW." Perhaps people shouldn't be treated like babies and toss junior a steak from the start?

Interesting that many if not most great Bible scholars will at some point profess that the more they learn about the Bible the more they realize they didn't/don't know.
