FOXNews.com - Obama Administration Reverses Course, Forbids Sale of 850,000 Antique Rifles

The South Korean government, in an effort to raise money for its military, wants to sell nearly a million antique M1 rifles that were used by U.S. soldiers in the Korean War to gun collectors in America.
The Obama administration approved the sale of the American-made rifles last year. But it reversed course and banned the sale in March – a decision that went largely unnoticed at the time but that is now sparking opposition from gun rights advocates.
A State Department spokesman said the administration's decision was based on concerns that the guns could fall into the wrong hands.
"The transfer of such a large number of weapons -- 87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines -- could potentially be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes," the spokesman told FoxNews.com.

I swear democrats....grrrrrrrr................

I cherish my father's M-1......................

You seemed shocked at this decision. You should be used to it after two years. Only two more to go.

I'm not stupid, Clinton did the same thing and the gubment melts down their "used" "confiscated" weapons of choice...... but really..... M-1's and the carbines were used by our fathers and grandfathers........ how do people not realize this?

A gov't that fears its people will be just and the people free. A people who fear their gov't will be oppressed and the gov't will be corrupt.

For the love of every thing holy, its not like the greatest generation sacrificed enough for World War II and then fought Korea........

Then the citizen has no right to honor them............. disgraceful!

No... he can't. And THAT is a HUGE problem. You can't have the type of gov't he seems to want with an armed populace.

Another thing he and Hitler have in common that Hitler and Beck do not... a desire to disarm private citizens.

Are you paying attention to your fascist leaders actions LG?

(I'm not saying that as a slur... Obama fits much of the technical definition of a fascist)

Second amendment

Do you think the USC means anything to Progressives or particularly Obama? He is a Constitutional Law professor with a "living Constitution" perspective... IOW's he is a trained expert in the use of illegitimate arguments to completely circumvent the original intent of the Constitution. He's an expert at making it say what it doesn't say and not say what it does.

I'd love to have a Garand at a good price to go along with my 1911.

By modern standard a Garand is pretty damned benign. It's 3.5+' long, weighs 9.5lbs, and uses an 8rnd "en bloc" clip. Big, heavy, and of limited firepower. (by modern standards) Not exactly the kind of weapon preferred by the nefarious types these days. Hoplophobes are a funny bunch to try making sense of.

yep it's only a huge problem if you want to actually own a gun

I'm not sure where the fear of these particular guns is coming from. Some might not even be able to be safely fired anymore.

I don't know much about guns, but I can tell you that the Second Amendment, even under a reading most dear to the gun lobby, has nothing to do with this.

.

I will bow to men much wiser than any of us:

“When firearms go, all goes – we need them every hour.” — George Washington.

“Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace.” — James Madison

“Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. … The right of citizens to bear arms is just one guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against the tyranny which now appears remote in America but which historically has proven to be possible.” — Hubert H. Humphrey Wow! How far the left has "progressed"...

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” — Thomas Jefferson

“A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.” — Sigmund Freud:birgits_giggle:

“God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it.” — Daniel Webster

“A system of licensing and registration is the perfect device to deny gun ownership to the bourgeoisie.” — Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

“As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms.” — Tench Coxe

“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.” — George Washington

“Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?” — Patrick Henry

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" -- Thomas Jefferson

Cutting off the supply of guns does have something do with it. Dem's have constantly reduced the types and now quantity available. So, is it a stretch, maybe. But not by much.

Only in the biggest philosophical sense, i.e. the decision being made that flooding that many guns into the system at once might cause problems versus let there be as many guns as possible.

But its not the equivalent of taking a gun from someone who has it, or of banning the already-existing sources of production or sale.

Do you think anyone in this administration actually knows an M1 from a Tootsie Roll? I seriously doubt it. Their immediate reaction is probably "Oooo, guns scare me!"... :ermm:

If the sale ever does come about, I would love to get one of the Garands for my collection.

Is there any government tyranny that you object to? Any liberty you are not willing to surrender?

The circulation of ~800,000 rifles that are undoubtedly in questionable condition is not a concern. The only people that would buy these rifles are collectors and for probably far more than what a far more lethal assault rifle could sell for (i.e. <$1000).
