The true genius behind CJH's rebuilding plan.

The first thing he did was install a high-powered high-scoring offense. Why? Because offense wins games. Scoring a bunch of points draws attention to the program. Makes offensive recruits want to come here and score. But as the old saying goes....

Defense wins championships. Our defense has been suspect for most of the season, and finally exposed here at the end.

However....

Now the top defensive recruits have seen that Tennessee is gonna score points. We have run with the big boys (except for Georgia, for now) this season. Maybe they see Tennessee as the place where they can make their name as "the missing element" that truly returns Tennessee to the elite status we enjoyed in the past. Helps with those massive NFL rookie contracts.

So far, 13 of the commits in the 2023 class are on defense. Sorely needed. Hopefully they all come with the attitude of being that missing element.

And, with a defense as productive as the offense, Tennessee wins championships.

Just the opinion of an everyday fan and VFL. Now go whoop Vanderbilt.

Honestly, our defense doesn't have to be as productive as the offense. Just be average and we can hang with anybody.

Heck, I’d offer that if we had a couple good CB and a safety we’d have a solid D too! We arent that far Vol fans, great season if we win tonight and the bowl game.

There is no doubt that 5 star players win titles, we need to consistently land multiple 5 star players and we will be ok.
Probaly is when that school in Athens. GA is constantly landing like 12 5 stars in every recruiting class every year it’s hard to catch up to them and ever get ahead.

No. Not the case. We need as much defense as possible. We need playmakers all across the defense. Big-time talent scattered all across the board is what we need on defense to win the SEC. NFL draftable players is what we need. We have to beat Georgia or we ain't winning the East.

My mind is blown that an offensive minded coach spent his early season as new gig to install the playbook on the side the of the ball he has excelled at.......

Championship offense + display needs on defense x D recruits see needs and commit = profit (basically) I like the rationale and I'm hoping it plays out like that!

Heupel has won games in spite of having mediocre talent on both sides of the ball. I love Hooker but the reasons there are doubts about him at the next level are legitimate. Heupel's system has made it easy for him to succeed most of the time. The system on the O side is elite. If he keeps putting talent into that system like they appear to be doing then the O will be championship caliber.

On D there isn't enough talent to be elite. But there is enough talent not to suck out loud. He has to assess whether he has the right staff or not. Covering a bad coach with talent only works until you meet a team with comparable talent. It doesn't get you championships.

Lots of great articles out there discussing pros and cons of portal recruiting vs high school recruiting. I'm tending to lean on portal recruiting paying off better earlier. Staffs can better evaluate talent where there's already a body of work at the P5 level. The best article I read suggested if you get an offer from somewhere you really like in high school, take it early. Slots are eaten up by portal guys these days.

IMO UGA has a boring brand of football it’s a winner guess that’s all that matters. If you get the best players by far just play boring football manage the game no risk and you win no flare but championships.
