I Want...

I'm not a Pelphrey guy. My guess is that if you take Rob Evans off that sideline with him, he looks just as clueless as he did at South Alabama.

I like him personally, but I think you're right about the coaching. He let's some street go down, but he does demand some intensity.

After mulling this over(with a very limited bb knowledge) I came to this conclusion....Pearl's previous teams had the potential to beat anybody they stepped on the court with. This years team has the potential to be beaten by any team they step on the court with.

You know sitting here trying to formulate what I'd like to add to this conversation, considering 1. I haven't spent 1 minute watching this team in practice, or a game for that matter. And 2. I really don't know squat about basketball. But I do know teamwork, sacrifice, execution, and I love the Tennessee Volunteers even thought I have zero hours credit towards a degree. So really we're talking about being unhappy with the end result of the product on the floor. In this modern age of video games, athlete idolization, and just plain biblical covetiveness of material things, it's me 1st/you next...it's all about me...get what you can, as much as you can, when you can. Then we go out and recruit athletes who can score...then wonder why they're a no defense playin, selfish, no-teamwork havin, street ball roster. Then again maybe they'll learn selflessness and humility...add that to raw talent and theres a team to watch...we'll see.

The coach holds final responsibility for the product. There is no argument on that from me. But if we are going to put all the defensive liability on a lack of effort and all we want to do is call out Pearl then dont we need to look as our teams effort the last few seasons. Has Pearl had a problem getting effort from his teams the last three years? I would argue that UT has played as 'hard' as almost any team in the country the last three years. So all the sudden when this years team does not hustle and play with 100% effort on defense (which they dont) it is all Pearl? Pearl was doing something to motivate his teams to play hard before this season. Some times we have to realize that with each player comes a personality and a demeanor that is hard to change. I am a high school basketball coach. And I can tell you that every year we have players that know how to play defense but cant bring themselves to put forth the effort. And then there are other players on our team that put forth a complete effort on defense. I think we brought in a number of kids that dont have the right demeanor or temperment to play hard-nosed tough defense. That is on Pearl because he chose to bring them in. But I dont think it is on Pearl that he cant motivate them to play defense like they need to. Huggins could not motivate Hopson to play defense. But he would bench him for his lack of defense. I would like to see some changes made in who gets minutes according to defense. That I dont argue with.

One motivation is to be made to ride the pine no matter what your credentials are . If you want to play , play with intensety and learn the defense . Pretty simple solution really.

Kenny Hall will help this team when he gets here next season. This team has no senior leadership either and no true shooters. We will be fine, but it's going to take the rigors of the SEC schedule to bring this team together somewhat. We will lost around 6-8 games this season, which isn't awful.

Kenny Hall will certainly help. I think priority #1, though, would be getting a guy that can shoot the eyes out of the basketball. Which leads me to a question about the 2009 recruiting class. If Tyler and/or Wayne goes pro, will we have another scholly? If so, does anyone know of any guys BP has on the radar?

As an aside, I just figured out that Josh Selby's high school is just 5 miles from my house. I'm gonna try to catch a game next friday.

Pearl can recruit and kids like his style of play--so he could be at UT a long time. I disagree with the original post. But you gotta play smart, you gotta play defense--and you gotta have guys who can score if you expect to beat quality teams. Before this year, the Vols played an uptempo style--forced a lot of turnovers, took a ton of shots (many of them somewhat bad)--but the shooting of Lofton and Smith overcame a lot of sloppiness. When you don't have people who can score dependably, then you're left with just the sloppiness. My question is where is the pressing defense that used to create so many turnovers? Don't see that as much. Of course, good, well-coached teams are not bothered so much by a pressing D--that's one issue. The Vols give up too many easy baskets--and they don't have people who can score in the paint--and so have problems. The Vols missed three or four easy*shots in the last three or four minutes of regulation--any one of which would have put UT in the lead.

Honestly, i think this team lacks the basketball IQ to run a full court press. IMO CBP realized it did us more harm than good. It will take some time but as the freshmen learn more about the college game i think we will see that same style full court pressure D

Shooting the ball well has been and continues to be underrated by many teams, coaches, scouts, etc. It is critical to any offense to have good shooters not only to score points (obviously) but to open up lanes for drives for other players. We need a consistent 3 point threat out there, and we have not had one for the first time in CBP's tenure. You could actually argue that CBP had at least two very reliable 3 point shooters each year he was at UT. Because as bad as our defense has been, we would be at worst 2 wins better if we could shoot outside well.

I agree that no one can reasonably make comparisons yet when Self for his career has 5 Elite 8's, a slew of conference titles and 1 NC; but CBP is a solid coach and great motivator, and turned a lifeless program around. Still, I think he's probably facing his biggest challenge yet as a coach with this team.

some more people to try and tell me that Bruce Pearl can carry Bill Self's bags as a coach. You're seeing the beginning of the end. Pearl will be done within 2 years.

Yeah you're overreacting a lot. You've only played what...13 games this year and have lost to 4 respectable opponents.

Is Pearl going to fall into the Fulmer boat? By typically having good teams...but not winning Championships? I know CBP won the SEC Championship last season.

Pearl will be here as long as he wants to be... He may leave if he figures out he can't win big here in the long run, if that's what happens, but this team is very young... And although they have alot of athletic talent, I'm not sure this bunch will ever develop into basketball players first, then athletes... We need a couple of first class guards to be able to compete at the highest level, to provide leadership, outside scoring, etc.., especially on the road... Look what taking away Lofton, and J Smith has done... And another example.. Look at what Fortson is doing at ARK... Great ball security, great penetration, great energy, slasher/scorer... He is already making them better as a freshman... Until Bruce gets quality guards to come here, we can expect alot more of the same in future years.

Since, in his career, he's never failed to finish out of the top 2 in his final conference standings I don't think so. Making it far in the SEC and NCAA Tournament's however is something he and the history our university have yet to prove.

You are right...I hope he ends up being here long term and winning championships.

What do you think will happen a few years from now if CBP has 3 or 4 SEC Championships but zero SEC Tourney championships and nothing past the Great 8 in the NCAA?

I know he hasn't gotten to the final 8 yet...I am being hypothtetical

Due to the fact that Tennessee was a basketball graveyard before he got here I think that the Athletic Deparment will give him some more time, but there's a time when you have produce more and go the furthest when it counts. For the record I don't think Pearl's currenty system will prohibit him from making a deep run unless he gives it a little tweaking.

I would love to see him make a deep tourney run. He has definitely brought my attention to the bball program. I have always followed them, but now I watch them every time I can...and get frustrated when they don't do good. Just like I do with football

If he can ever bring in a true perennial big-man then the run may be possible. After the opening weekend of the tourney it's always about the paint.

I think Pearl at some point will have enough and really start to play guys that will run thru a brick wall for him. Right now it sems to me he has no control over what is going on out on the court. I don't know if he has gotten bigger than the program or what but he needs to go back to what got him here. And we all know that effort and playing hard is that answer.
