His Wikipedia page doesn't say how old he is but since he graduated from the UT College of Law in 1954 I would guess 85. Let's just hope that John is still in good health in 2016 and has many years left. John was great and for those of us over 40 that remember when listening to the games on the radio was the only way to follow them (even some of our biggest victories in the '80's were not on tv such as UCLA in 1989) he was just as good as watching it anyway. However, I don't think we would miss him as much as we do if we had even an average play by play man now. Bob is just the most boring man that ever called a game....Mike Keith would be so much better and bring a younger and more modern touch to the broadcast.

He retired in 1998 after the NC game against FSU...But you already knew that didn't you?

Whats wrong with these people John Ward is a icon, not just at Tennessee he is one of the best to ever do his job anywhere across the country.:banghead2:

I'm sure john would love to come back an call one more game. But due to ut athletic director budget cuts there's no way ut can afford john but I'm sure ol Dave would pay him out of his pocket

Since the Battle at Bristol is now official, how great would it be for Tennessee fans to get John Ward to come out of retirement and call this game?

Now I don't know his health status or if he would even would be interested, but since this is being billed as the biggest college game in history, John Ward calling the game would be only fitting.

So tell Mr. Ward to dust off that old microphone and give it one more go!
His last broadcast was Tennessee winning the National Title. You can't top that!

when your last game is a Nat'l Championship, why in hades would you do a curtain call. Plus, his sidekick, Bill Anderson would have to be at his side or it would not be right.

I don't hate him, but he was not a great play-by-play man. I think the obsession with John Ward is that most grew up listening to him... nostalgia.

It is ridiculous to come on Volnation and post that our iconic broadcaster was not a great play by play man, as though you have just stated an established fact, and not give even one reason to support what is likely a minority opinion of the members on this forum. Ward had a style that was all his own. He exuded genuine enthusiasm with a fast cadence, balanced narrative and descriptive over the top style that added levity for the listener. (Cobb twists at the 10! He turns at the 5! He lunges at the 3! What does he do at the 1? He scores a TOUCHDOWN for the BIG ORANGE! - An actual call from the 1989 Duke game) He sounded like a man having a blast watching the game and we had a blast listening to him.

I never heard 1 live broadcast of John Ward as I never set foot in Knoxville till 99'. I have heard plenty of his replays on You Tube to know that man is one of the greats. I thought Kevin Harlin was a great play by play man for Mizzou in the day. Kevin wishes he could call a game on radio half as good as John Ward.

Why get so upset if someone says they dislike John Ward or anyone else for that matter? Doesn't bother me that someone might dislike John Ward. To each his own. I love chocolate ice cream, some don't.

You're right. To each his own. Doesn't bother you, but it does bother most all Vols fans. Good to know that the OP was only kidding.

You are right. John Ward was not a great play by play man. HE was the best there has ever been PERIOD!!! I have listened to a large number of play by play guys but for the drama, excitement, and fairness he brought to a game no one I have heard is close.

SIAP

As much as I would love to hear John Ward call another game, it would make the return to his successor all the more excruciatingly painful.

John squeezed the most out of every play. Most of the time the player had already scored and was on the bench with John still giving his listeners vintage John Ward..."To the twenty, the ten, to the five...Touchdown Big orange!"

I would also like to hear John Ward do one more UT basketball game.

"Barkley gets the pass low and...YOU, SIR, WALKED!"
"Houston pops...DROPS!" "Dyron Nix at the line, for the one and one...dribbles...Nix...CLICKS!" Like it was yesterday, bro! I can do this all day, lol.

John's most effective use of the first line was with respect to former Florida center Neal Walk: "Walk, you walked!"
