I'd like to see Nico get substantial playing time Saturday against Kentucky.

I

You must have a reading problem. I said I have not seen Nico play enough to tell if he was ready or good. It is just my opinion that he is a better runner, because most of the time I think Joe is bad at running the football. Yes he makes a good run here and there, but with his size he can do a lot better, When Joe really wants to run, he does very well. However, I did see Nico run in the spring game, and I was impressed with his running ability.

I don't have a reading problem. You said Nico was a better runner than Milton. I asked you how you knew that. Just because a player shows does something in the spring game doesn't mean that will translate to games where the "opponent is not his teammate". No one has seen enough of Nico to make any judgement calls about how he will or won't play and how he will compare to Milton, Hooker, Dobbs, Manning, etc.

Hindsight is 20/20 but those last minute playing times against VA and UTSA kind of hurt. If Nico still had 4 games on his redshirt we could pretty much play him out. Maybe hold him out for the Uconn or vandy game. The post season does not count so he could still play in the bowl without burning the redshirt. Honestly, not many good players stay for their Senior year anyway so it may all be for naught but it makes you think.

If Nico is as good as we hope, he'll be gone before the possibility of a redshirt comes into play. If he isn't as good as we hope, we won't want him here for 5 years.

You guys that complain about the Nico threads, why do you open them ??

It's interesting to hear the different takes on our 5* guy.

A player can go pro after three years, whether one is a redshirt year or not. So, in theory, if Nico was good enough to go pro after 2025, he would either do so as a redshirt sophomore or a true junior. What does it matter?

I'm on the other side of the coin here...we should have played him more against UVA and UTSA.
Once those games were put away early in the 3rd quarter it should have been Nico the rest of the day.
Absolutely. Hopefully we will be seeing more of him and our other younger players. We need to see some of the young DBs and young OL. We lose a lot in those positions this year and we can be in bad shape next year if we don't get those guys some reps.

I mean I would redshirt him if possible. I don’t think he’s here that long BUT never hurts to have extra eligibility. There’s been plenty of guys who could go pro that decided to stay in college. Unless Milton is hurt I don’t see a huge advantage in getting him snaps for Vandy or UConn etc. He knows he’s the heir apparent anyways for next year.

It matters if Nico wants to play and has extra eligibility. I mean I’m with you he probably goes pro early but what’s really the big gain of getting snaps against Vandy or UConn this year? Would you rather have in game experience vs the worst teams on our schedule or have the guy have an extra year of eligibility?

If Nico is as good as predicted he won't be here to use that redshirt.
If he’s not he will be blasted by a lot on here hide & watch, that’s what they do. It’s just not here though that’s at all the top P5 schools, a segment wants their million dollar return and they want it NOW.

I personally think that Nico should have played in about 5 of our games so far. If you have no plans to redshirt him then he should play in every game.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Heup actively plans to redshirt anyone unless he has to due to injuries. That being said, Nico still has 2 games to give. I think those are UCONN and Vandy unless Joe gets hurt. JMO
If Nico is as good as advertised we will only have him 2 yrs. If he is not better than Joe now, I question if he is as good as advertised

the bowl game thing was a one year waiver in 2022 as far as counting as one of four games. If they made it permanent, I've not seen it

Milton had more than double the rushing yards than anyone else on the team. He threw for 271, rushed for 59. If he had any support around, that's plenty. Again, why are you unwilling to acknowledge in the 2 losses Milton had solid/good outings with ZERO support. He's thrown for 550 yards and 4 TDs in those two losses. That should be enough, unless you expect him to have Heisman type performances to hide the deficiencies in the other aspects of the game. You want a damn scapegoat because you don't like the guy.

But, again, I ask you why are there SO many threads about Milton, but not about the drops and the RBs not producing during important times? Why is Milton being held to such an insane standard, yet the RBs and WRs are allowed to be mediocre at best during those Ls?

Because quarterback is the most important position and he’s not had a single “complete game”. I’ll say it again…he’s been sitting around no70 overall in qbr this year even though our schedule is backloaded giving him a chance to pad his stats early in the year.

You’re giving him so much credit for having a decent first half where he actually looked like you’d expect a 6h year olay in heuplel’s system to look. He should be the strength of the team…not the weakness. And while he’s not the worst qb out there, you’d not going to beat really good teams in todays game without amazing qb play. That’s just how it is. The make an absolute fortune when they’re good because their play alone matters more than many of the other position groups combined.

To answer your other question, no…his numbers put up against bama and UF weren’t good enough to win because (obviously)…we lost both games. While you point out the passing yardage you neglect to mention be gave both teams a td. Technically, the int against Florida wasn’t a pic6 but it set them up at what the 7 yard line? They scored 2 plays later. If you’re just going to focus on his numbers and not consider what else he didn’t (or didn’t do) I guess you could make a case that it was good enough but that’s not the whole story.

Regardless, this debate has run its course. Fans will all have their own opinions and none of us should take offense to, however, any other fan sees it. I do think most of our fans regardless of how they feel about Milton believe that we will see dynamic quarterback most of the time so long as Heupel is the coach here. Like I mentioned earlier in the conversation… Milton will end up being the only quarterback that’s been under Heupel’s tutelage for 2+ years that hasn’t put up monster numbers in his system. And there is a 15+ year track record from Oklahoma to Missouri to Central Florida and then Tennessee (with hooker). The future is bright!

I have 0.0% doubt that you will be proven correct with your assessment. I’ve seen a ton of video from Nico in high school and he was playing big boy football out in California. Class six a public school in the LA area has some dudes out on that field. Yet Nico barely ever takes a clean shot. His running style is like a combination of hooker and Bryce young. Not sure how top and fast he is but he makes real a quick/explosive decision when he chooses to run and is very twitchy/quick when defenders get near him. You never see a defender, pin his ears back and come out and hard because they will with.

We’ve never seen that type of high-level running out of Milton. Milton is always kind of timid. It seems like when he begins to run and is much more of a power runner. That is… When he doesn’t run out of bounds short of the first down marker. I’d much rather have a quarterback that is real twitchy/quick in the open field that can make guys miss. Because even when you run over a descend, are you still end up on the ground. If you make the defender Miss you are still running, of course.

I was wondering about that. When you read the bylaw it specifically addresses conference championship games but seems kinda vague about exhibition games so I wasnt sure if they were referring to bowls or not.

You are known for your excellent takes.

If you're wondering, Bailey is currently on the bench in Louisville where he is a WALK ON after failing to do anything at UNLV.

Maybe we should get him back, eh?
You picked a Bailey post from back before he went into the portal. Why?

The coaches have already says they have no plans to redshirt him and he is the #2. Redshirt useless when he gone in 3 years anyways

I also remember a kid named Peyton Manning who returned for his senior season, and he'd already graduated. He also wasn't making any NIL money. As he said at the time, being the starting quarterback at Tennessee isn't a bad thing to be. Better now that they can finally get (legally) paid.
Peyton had the Manning name and his family had money. Same reason there's no real push to start Arch.
