If it feels sometimes like we're wading through Negative Nancy molasses just to chat about our team...

It was one of Butch Jones's phrases. It's not that the phrase is bad on its own - I think Heupel's used it a few times too, for example - but if ol' Butch had a Common Phrase Hall of Fame, "complEmentary football" would be in the display case alongside all the other things he said.
Butch may have used it, but it is a phrase commonly used hy many football coaches and analysts.

It simply means that all three phases of the game are doing well. Ie. Special Teams are pinning the opponents deep for the defense or setting up good field position for the offense. The defense is getting off the field quickly, the offense is capitalizing on the good field position provided by the D and STs.

At least thats how i would interpret the phrase.

I don't care what the subject is on public forums - trolls are gonna troll.

Go on any forum, it's just the way it is. The trick is to just completely ignore them. Trolls live for any kind attention, and if they get none they tend to go away.

Thus is our world. Optimists and pessimists. Problem with some of our opties is, they label realists negas. Realists just voice what they see at the moment and most often change with the FLOW. That's LIFE.
Nope. Voicing an opinion in the moment is reactionary, not reality. Waiting for the flow before voicing a negative opinion is reality. Some posters were saying a few games ago that Heupel was stubborn for not inserting Nico, stating all kinds of crazy opinions about it. That's uninformed, reactionary takes, not reality. You're confused and conflating, without any interest in nuance

I don't disagree. But that's pretty much every SEC message board. Overreact to the previous week. When we lose, everyone is down in the dumps. When we win, people get cocky and think we're the best team in America.

I remember I was one of the few people here optimistic on beating South Carolina, which seems silly in hindsight. South Carolina is bad, but people were still negative after the Florida loss.

But on the flipside, you have people who thought we'd beat Kentucky by 5 touchdowns and think Mizzou will be "easy" because we won a few.
And because we beat them bad the last two years, which has no bearing on this year's game.

...that's because we are.

Take the week before last as an example.

@Vols1313 said Kentucky would beat us, 65 to 7.
@turdherder11 went for Kentucky by 11. As did @volmanNC .
@CAVPUT thought they'd beat us by 8 points.
@captainsword said the Cats by 6.
@Creek Bottom , @jarhead and @37620VOL said by 4 points.
@Johnnyreb#VFL said they'd take us by a field goal.
@zooguy agreed with that, KY by a FG.
So did @crawdaddyjc .

I am not saying these fellas are all trolls. A few are, but most are just nega-Vols.

Point is, there are a vocal minority of folks on these boards who never see the good in our team because they are too focused on complaining about each and every little blemish.

This is the same crew who dismiss any team we beat as a weak team. We never beat any good teams, because the teams we beat are obviously inferior, because we were able to beat them. Sure, that is circular logic, but most trolls and nega-vols like it that way.

And folks like that are always going to underestimate our lads.

Let's lay it on Mizzou this week, send them back to the bowels of the conference alongside Vandy, Kentucky, and USCe. Well, and Florida lately, lol.

Go Vols!
I agree. Way too many good things happening to be negative all the time.

I don't know that I blame folks. They've endured a lot. Good people who have endured a whole lot. Trash cans. OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE. 13 men on the field. Running a Prevent defense against JaMarcus Russell when he threw three interceptions because of blitzes earlier in the game. Letting Tim Tebow run draws to the left. Letting Matt Mauck run wherever he damn well wanted. 15 straight losses against those arrogant pricks down south. Losing to Kentucky when they had a converted WR at QB. "Five star hearts." Orange dogs. Getting so low on yourself that you let your coaching staff play Southern Cal highlights in your facilities. "ComplEmentary football." That stupid North Carolina field goal. "A'ight."

Hell, Tennessee ran a commercial on the jumbotron that proudly proclaimed "fear the pants." Fear the *!@*(#&!?! pants. Lord. I still can't.

Vol fans have endured a lot. I just can't blame 'em for needing time to get past that.

But don't you worry. No need to worry at all. Heupel's gonna get 'em living right again.
I have been a vol fan since 1976 and my dad was too until he passed. he started being a fan in 1952.he taught me a valuable lesson and that they will always fight til the end and dont bet against em. Go By God Vols!!!

There are many, many beautiful things in the fall,....colors change, cooler weather, less rain (normally), Halloween with kids, Thanksgiving, Christmas just to name a few. Some act like college football is all there is. It isn't. Life is too precious to waste several days focusing on losses or wins. Enjoy the moments - all of them. Just my opinion.
Sadly my fall is largely dictated on how well our football team does it consumes me it’s a disease with no cure but I wouldn’t want a cure anyway. I’m a Vol till I die thru the good times and bad.

OP set the standard pretty high for himself now, especially calling folks out and “taking names” … I get it, he’s a very positive guy and ALL VOL.

Regardless of who we play, I’m always hopeful and wishing for the best. Reality is an entirely different story - there’s nothing wrong with fans “predicting” a loss on a message board but being hopeful of a WIN and cheering the team on regardless 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have an idiot friend who offered me these jewels following the bammer game.

1. Joe Milton is our worst QB ever and its entirely his fault we lost (neither of which is even remotely true!).
2. Who cares if we go 9-3 and go to the Music City Bowl (hey dumbass, that's a better record than ANY of Dooley, Jones, Kiffin or Pruitt achieved, and its two years running we have exceeded them!)
3. (Upon my commenting that next year a 10-2 team from the SEC will have a great chance to make the playoffs) "I don't want to back in that way" (hey Dumbass! If there are 12 teams, ITS NOT BACKING IN!)
4. He refuses to watch the Vols until Milton is benched for Nico (changed his mind last week though).

I told him his fan priviliges were revoked for the year, lol.

Just because there's VFL, Orange, or Vol in their name doesnt mean they are true fans. I'm sure a few are KY or even Vandy Boyz. Living vicariously through their pseudonym.

Butch is living rent free in the Heads of many VN ppl, as you said Complimentary Football is a common term used throughout football by several great coach's. So for those that are still in the 3rd grade, they can use Supporting football or corresponding football or interrelated football. To replace this inflammatory word that is ruining football as we know it, and 🤣 if that makes them feel better.

You definitely need to make some new friends

It's a pick score contest. I don't normally play, but when I do, I'll often make a "less crowded" pick just to have a better chance to win, even if I don't think that will be the outcome.

Think it's a bit asinine to act like we're wading through a sea of negativity just because a few posters out of 120 picked the other team to win. I mean ... obviously the guy who picked Kentucky 65-7 is a moron, but none of the others are crazy.
It’s a joke lol , you think I really thought KY could even score 65 Hahahah
