If making a bowl is big for next year

I would hope winning 6 games and making a bowl would not be an issue next year, and I don’t think it will be. Regardless, not really sure how Milton figures into that, as he won’t be here next year. Are you saying that you think Nico should get the majority of the playing time in our bowl game this year in order to better prepare him for next season? I personally think Nico will get a decent amount of playing time in the bowl, but I fully expect Milton to start. I highly doubt Heupel would pull Milton as the starter in his final game with UT when he’s playing close to where he grew up, and his family and friends are in attendance to see him play for the Vols one last time. My guess is we will see Milton taking about 2/3 of the snaps and Nico the other 1/3.

Yes!! Exactly what I'm saying, otherwise it's wasted opportunity for gaining experience

Everyone always talks about making a bowl being important for the extra practices for next year but if we play Milton instead of Nico that seems counter productive.
If Iamaleava can't lead us to six wins next year because he didn't start the Citrus Bowl, the problem won't be that he didn't start the Citrus Bowl.

I have been an advocate of Nico getting more playing time all year, and I know a lot of other fans feel similarly. I guess I can understand the desire to redshirt him, but I would have at least liked to see him get more snaps in the four games he did play. And I would like to see him get a lot of playing time in the Citrus Bowl. If he plays well, I think it could help his confidence a lot going into the offseason and carrying over into next year. But just based on what Heupel has done in the past, I’m guessing that Nico will get roughly 1/3 of the snaps and Milton will get the other 2/3 of the offensive snaps. And I’m not trying to act like I know better than Heupel or anything like that, as that would be totally ridiculous. I just always like to see our future star players get as much of playing time as possible, especially at QB. When a season doesn’t go quite as well as you’d initially expected it to, you’ve got to rely on hope for the future, both in terms of recruiting and guys already on the roster who will have a bigger role in years to come. I’m not so much upset with our record this year, as I was initially guessing we’d go 9-3 in the regular season…but the two main things that bother me are losing to such a bad Florida team and the fact that we played so bad in all our losses. We almost got blown out in all four instances.

2 things to think about and I am not trying to be a prick. First, playing well in the bowl game last year did exactly what for Milton this year? So playing well in this years bowl game would probably have zero bearing on Nico next year. And second, 3 of our 4 loses are to top 10 teams. The UF loss was terrible but the other three are not. Most of the ranked team would stand a really good chance of losing all three of those games.

If making a bowl is big for next year

How does playing Milton figure in to that?
Friend, you should've asked, "If making the playoffs is important for next year, shouldn't we give Nico the earliest possible start on winning experience in tough games?"

That would have made sense as a question.

Asking about making a bowl doesn't. We would earn a bowl trip in 2024 even if we started Ollie Lane at QB against Iowa. It's simply not a goal that is at any risk.

Go Vols!

Using same logic - should any senior not coming back next year play. Screw those kids that have stuck it out and had a good year. They don't need no stinkin reward of playing in bowl game - we have used them up so let them just go away and make way for the new crop. Geez
Exactly. It’s just the worst fan fantasy crap ever lol.

It's Joe Milton's senior year.

Would you ask Heath Shuler, Casey Clausen, Josh Dobbs, Hendon Hooker, Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, Condredge Holloway, Andy Kelly, Erik Ainge, Tony Robinson, Bobby Scott, Jimmy Streater, Jeff Francis, Dewey Warren, Tyler Bray, Daryl Dickey, Jeff Olszewski, Bobby Dodd, Alan Cockrell, Bubba Wyche, Jerry Colquitt, etc. to sit the last game that they would ever suit up for the Orange and White?

Joe Milton deserves the right to start he bowl game, make his last mark on his career at Tennessee and ride off into the sunset. Nico's time starts once Joe has done all he can do. Nico will get the same respect.

Agree somewhat but I will point out that Tennessee's performance against Georgia and Missouri was just not good. Sure other ranked teams would have likely lost those games but they would have been competitive. Both games were pretty much over at halftime. Missouri game stayed interesting because they couldn't score as much. Not a good look when you are not even in the game from kickoff.

What kind of message do you think benching the senior who has started every game this season sends to future recruits?
That's true but on the other side of things there is no way I would come to UT if they had a starter in front of me because your not going to see the field.

I agree with this but he shouldn’t be above benching if he plays like crap.

Main thing on the QB front will be how many of our O-Line are coming back. If they are healthy next year, Nico will get the main thing every developing QB needs: clean pockets where he can wheel and deal and make plays that can be teachable film for the coaches.

When you are in the film room watching yourself run for your life every play it slows your progression because the QB never gets through that decision tree.
