petrino would be one to come in here and get us back to the top but 5 years down the road he would jump ship and leave for some reason and here we would be again

Mullen will not leave MSU for UT. Hard to believe, but he really loves it there. Might be different if you throw 3.5 Mil+ at him, but as of now, I'd say he stays. Wouldn't want him though. He really doesn't have any signature SEC wins in his career there.

Tressel would be suspended for the first four games plus the bowl game for any team that hires him.

Gary Patterson is a great coach and an even better person. He is, however, a Chavis type of guy. H's not flashy, doesn't have the hair or fan appeal. I'll be extremely surprised if he leaves Ft. Worth. If Tennessee really wanted him, they should have gone after him hard when they hired Dooley. He's not a realistic option anymore.

Because he can't win in the SEC ??

He hasn't coached in the SEC ... I think his name being out there would be a major upgrade from where Tennessee is at now. He has a record of 229-79-2 with 94-11 with Ohio State since 2001. He also has only 3 losing season since 1986. The only two with better coaches with true experience on the list that can probably correct Tennessee's downfall is Gruden or Petrino.

Those are some pretty F'n lame candidates. WTF is this, Idaho? None of those candidates will be welcome by UT fans. Those candidates all suck. Where is a UT alumni , instead of a merc hire. F that list. Gruden... would love it, but , man please, he is going to philly. All the others suck as options for UT. They don't give a crap about UT and neither did Dooley

Please explain to me why you would take Smart but not Strong?

Because I don't think a team coached by Smart gets waxed by Syracuse.

I think Strong has been very lucky this year in that the schedule his team has played has not been difficult at all. I think Smart has a betterr chance, having been a DC at Alabama. Who really knows--I just haven't been a Strong believer at all.

I will give it a shot...

Gruden - No
Patterson - It would take $5-6 million
Petrino - Yes, but the good lord would hit Knoxville with a tornado
Petersen - No, his special needs child needs to stay in Boise
Tressel - Funny
Strong - Yes
Mullen - Yes
Franklin - Yes
Tuberville - Yes, but too old to start over
Cutcliffe - Yes, but too old to start over
Smart - Yes

Yes, Cut an Tubs ae way too old to start over.

Regards,

Bill Snyder

The only viable UT Alumni in coaching other than Gruden that would even be close to being a head coach in college is Tee Martin and he is no where close to being ready to take a job like Tennessee.

Oh man, this coach search if Dooley is fired is going to be interesting. If we arent willing to pay upper 3's to 5 mill I don't see us getting anyone worth firing dooley over

If you hire Smart ... your just hiring another Dooley and Sal. It seems anyone Saban plugs into his staff he makes look awesome. Like Alabama ... Tennessee needs to find a head coach that players would drool to play for. Saban= Belichick ... teams try to duplicate there success but never can.

You're not going to find hardly anyone who will stay at UT for 10 + years. Times are different. If we can get 'em for take it and hope they leave the program attractive enough for the next guy to be successful.

There are only three names on that list that would please most of Volnation (Gruden, Patterson and Petersen), and all are long shots, for reasons that have nothing to do with UT. Not sure money is the main motivator with these three.

The two best gameday coaches who would likely come won't be asked (Petrino and Tressel), and the next man in line (Strong) would get some pushback. I doubt we'll poach a current SEC HC, which rules out Mullen, and we need to stop plucking wormy apples from the Saban tree, which eliminates Smart. Cutcliffe is looking back when we need to look forward, Franklin is hated here and Tuberville will hopefully go elsewhere, maybe Auburn.

If we can't get Gruden or Patterson, we're going to have to think outside the box. Hart has had a year to do exactly that and should have started compiling a list after the UK game.
