If old Joe Milton shows up again—how long should Heupel leave him in the game for?

If Milton plays like old Joe Milton, at what point do you pull him if you’re Heupel?

So, one throw? We are to the point where we are literally critiquing every single pass attempt just to look for one example of a bad throw? And depending on the referee that actually could have been pass interference.
He over threw a receiver who was wide open in the end zone for 6. Only way that receiver would have been able to catch that is if he had a 6 foot ladder he could stand on!

Who was over thrown yesterday? A ball was slightly high to Squirrel White and that's really the only "over throw" I can remember....
How about the wide open receiver in the end zone for 6? Way over his head. Perhaps you were refreshing your drink when that happened.

Yet ANOTHER thread on this. But each one is so unique and addresses a whole other important part of the topic. So each author of these threads should feel very proud that they were “that guy” that wowed us all with their Football IQ.

Questions you should ask yourself before posting these stupid threads:

Is Josh Heupel a good coach?
Is Josh Heupel a good offensive coach?
Is Josh Heupel a good QB coach?
Does Josh Heupel trust Joe Milton with the football?

Last, but certainly not least, am I even remotely proficient at football at this level of competition?

Ok, then, STFU.

Fair points but please factor in that none of those stats that make your point look better were downfield throws. None of them minus the few drops that occurred within the first 4 drives of the game. It’s misleading to pad those stats off WR screens
so lets just say those drops where catches.. you think the momentum stays the same or gets better?

Heupel also played Milton over Hooker in 2021, and barring Milton getting injured, would have kept playing him, in spite of Hooker clearly being the better QB.

Heupel is not infallible in his judgement as a coach.

We don’t know if we have a good one yet. We may think we do, but we don’t know. Lots of 5 stars don’t turn out to be true 5 stars when the lights come on
For example, Harrison Bailey. If he'd panned out he'd be leading the Vols right now instead of being a PWO at his third college, Louisville.

I voted keep Milton. Trying to sift out my opinions on the AP game. Confidence is a huge factor in how players play the game. I think taking Milton out would destroy his confidence and if Nico doesn't work out as we all think he will (I'm pretty sure he's going to be awesome though) then we have a QB1 with zero confidence. If we put in Nico and he's not quite ready for the increased speed of college football and not having a rock solid understanding of the playbook and he gets destroyed out there? Well there goes his confidence too (and maybe his health). Bringing in Nico should be a last resort unless it's garbage time. I sure would love to see him out there though.

But what if Nico leads a comeback and goes on to be a freshman all-American?

My husband and I had this very conversation Sunday.

Oh believe me I see it that way too. The what ifs. I get it, I really do. It's a question of risk and how far into the season we are. Is there a chance it could end up like I said in my post...sure. Is there a chance Nico comes out and is the greatest thing to have happened at UT since Manning? Of course. I would absolutely love to see Nico come out and annihilate everyone. That's a decision I'm glad I don't have to make.

I’ll take Joe over an injured freshman on the road with no road snaps under his belt

Neither the season nor the program is defined by one game. I don't want Nico thrown into a bad situation. If Milton proves he needs to be replaced then it needs to be done on the Sunday following the game

*Disclaimer - I did not read every post in this, nor the other 4,457,457,457 titled threads about Joe Milton.
Just want to say, he is 5 - 1 as a starter for the Vols. 1-1 in 21, 2-0 in 22, and he is 2-0 in 2023 so far. I don't give a damn how he gets it done, as long as we win. Albeit early, he is completing passes at 66.6 percent, and that include a fair amount of drops. I would be happy if he can keep that pace for the entire season! HH was at .68 in 21 and .70 last season. Time will tell what happens, but its wayyyyy too early for all these posts, but I can;t say I'm surprised either with all the professional QB scouts we are blessed to have on VolNation!!

Joe Milton is the guy no matter what. He’s had a couple bad passes but overall his decision making and control of the offense is light years ahead of Nico.

Nico is nowhere near ready to play SEC football…
