...which way would the fans with the Pearl As Basketball Messiah complex go?

A) "That traitorous bastard! He swore he loved Tennessee and he betrayed us for money! Screw him screw him screw him!!"

B) "The only reason he left is because you negative jackasses ran him off! Screw you fairweather fans for running off the best coach UT has ever had or ever will have!"

I really can't decide. I'm thinking more B than A initially, but with A winning out over time. Certainly by the next time Memphis played in TBA.

Come on. Given the choice of ripping Tanning Bed Bruce or blaming me, what do you think the orange overall crowd is going to do?

But over time, I think they'd feel betrayed and cheated and used. I'm thinking in particular of a post a few weeks ago pining about how Pearl "loves Tennessee more than anyone, even Coach Fulmer." It's amazing how strong the cult of personality can be.

They'd scream at you because you're here, but they'd feel jilted at the altar by Pearl. Within two years, they'll hate him.

... and be pissed off when he takes the Tigers to an Elite 8 or Final Four.

I don't want him gone either. But there's a large contingent of folks on this site with whom you cannot have a conversation about Bruce Pearl the Actual Basketball Coach because they think he's the Chosen One. If he spurns UT for Memphis, they're going to go through emotional contortions about like the Rastafarians had to do when Haile Selassie died.

i understand what u are saying completely and alot of those ppl would fall into those descriptions. i was just giving my level headed approach to the situation. i just couldnt consider him a trader bc he has no history with the university. for him its just a job, unlike someone such as fulmer (say what u want about the guy) who really did care about and love ut football.

i have no idea why we're even discussing this, we have one of the best coaches in basketball...a few years ago this season would have been considered a huge success the fact that so many are complaining after winning the east going to the sec championship and making it to the tourney is just a sign of how high pearl has raised our expectations which is a sign of how great of a coach he is.

I would have been a lot more dismayed at the prospect of that a couple of years ago than I am today. Since then, I've reluctantly come to believe that Pearl just isn't that kind of a coach. It's going to take a radical overhaul of his system for a deep tournament run by a Pearl team to be anything other than a fluke.

I don't think he deserves to be fired or anything, but it's pretty clear now what he is -- great marketer, good recruiter, pretty good basketball coach. He was a great hire for a program in the toilet like UT was, but I can't see why a team that expects to be on a Final Four-type level would want to pay him $3m a year to keep them at that level.

He's the college basketball version of Mike D'Antoni. If you want to entertain the casual fan, he's your guy. If you want to collect hardware, hire someone else.

The fact that this belief is so widespread among UT fans is what makes me wonder how you guys would react if Pearl were to leave UT for a rival like Memphis.

Fine. That just means you like two coaches who will never win a damn thing of major importance. Nothing wrong with that.

what it means is that you're shortsighted and delusional...were you saying all of this last year after we beat memphis and became number 1, or did pearl all of a sudden become a terrible coach who is incapable of winning after this one sub-par year (which was still fantastic by ut standards) us vol fans have a terrible reputation around the league for being fair weather fans, please stop giving credence to this steriotype.

1. My position on Pearl's system not being one that wins championships has been consistent.
2. If you can't spell stereotype, you shouldn't accuse others of perpetuating one.

then are final fours the only thing that is major? what are your realistic expectations for this program? maybe that is where u and i disagree on this issue. up until pearl was here i watched with hope every night the painful torture that was ut basketball season. my highest expectations were maybe this yr we can make the tourney. then pearl arrived and raised the bar. my expectation is to reach the elite 8 in the next 2-3 years. he raised the bar so its very hard for me to say we should hand over the program to someone else when im seeing improvement.

Pearl is consistently GOOD, not great, but good. Winning your division 75% of the time proves that. Now it's obviously time to step up his play in the tournament.

They judge you by what you do in March. If you're paying a basketball coach $2 mil per, reaching a Final Four at some point had damn well better be realistic. Otherwise, you're just wasting money.

i will also say it was a mistake to give him that large of a raise. but maybe thats what hamilton is after. throw out the big money and final fours will come. thats the only rationale that i could come up with for givin him raise like that.
