…would we be a better program today? Always think of this what if during Florida week. What if coach Dickey got here a year earlier and recruited Spurrier to play in a more modern offense? What if Spurrier came to UT as a two sport athlete? I imagine Spurrier might have been a UT fan and a Johnny Majors fan when he was a kid. What if Majors added Spurrier to has staff when he came home in 77? What if Spurrier took over as the head ball coach in the 90s and paired up with Shuler, Manning Martin and others without a Florida dynasty to worry about? Would he have have left the program in better shape after he left/retired? Would we have 2,3 or 4 more Natties? Would streets, buildings be named after him today?

If Majors had added Spurrier to his coaching staff, he would have likely replaced Majors and upgraded the program and we would have a couple of Heismans in the trophy case with Manning and Shuler winning them.

I could see a street being named after Spurrier.

He could have won at least 1 natty.

Spurrier was on the Nation Sunday and talked about being a Vol and Johnny Majors fan growing up. He even mentioned attending the 55 Ga Tech game with his father. Thank you Bowden(I'm not changing my system for anybody) Wyatt.

Spurrier was too slow to have been a great single wing tailback. Steve Sloan from Bradley County , who was a year ahead of Spurrier , would have been a great TB along the lines of Majors and Hank Lauricella. But he went to to Alabama to play for the Bear. Can't blame him or Spurrier for not wanting to play for the only major college team still running the single wing.

Hard to say. We would have been better than Fulmer with Spurrier. I think we would have had at least one more NC. Now the question is, would we be better off now? Probably be close to the same. Why? The administration would have been the same.
The last part of your statement is particularly telling. Between Joe Johnson & Donde Plowman the UTK administration ranged from complacent to disastrous. At the present time, it's going mighty fine.

Did you not see back to the future? Can't change the natural course of time.

Spurrier also had 5 SEC Championships to Fulmer's 2 SEC Championships.

The greatest what if in my book is what if Rich Rodriguez had not turned down the Alabama HC job in 2007 and Alabama never goes and gets Saban.

Spurrier's big issue was Florida State. He would often win the SEC but lose to FSU. Bobby Bowden owned him. I would have rather had Bobby Bowden during that era.

Spurrier would have been Josh Heupel before there was a Josh Heupel. Fulmer's downfall was largely due to his ego, rigidity, and eventual laziness.

Difference in Fulmer and Saban:

Fulmer wins a NC , loses his OC and replaces him in-house with a 32 year old rb coach

Saban wins a NC, loses his OC and replaces him with a former NFL and College HC; twice

"I don't hire anybody unless they are smarter than I am. If they aren't I don't need them."

Fulmer did not make good hires.....as a
H C or when A D....lot talent wasted he
Stocked talent top to bottom some never got chance to play.....if team got lead
and played subs it was handoff tackle
Heupel subs they run offense....

Doc saved a woman’s life who should have died. They started a family together. Marty altered an encounter between his parents, which in turn altered his family’s income.

At the end of the day Spurrier has the same number of national championships as Fulmer despite having a better recruiting base and never went undefeated in a full season like Fulmer. Lucked out getting a second game in 96 against FSU.

Also never beat Butch Jones. Imagine having a Tennessee coach who was 0-2 against Butch. Embarrassing
