If Spurrier was a Vol

I never really understood the hatred Spurrier had for UT. I get being disappointed that they didnt offer him a football scholarship (i believe he was actually offered a UT basketball scholarship). But it was just bad timing as the offense UT ran at the time didnt fit him at all. It was a bad fit for both sides and it obviously worked out for him as a player at UF. Never got the bitterness/woman scorned mentality from him.

Difference in Fulmer and Saban:

Fulmer wins a NC , loses his OC and replaces him in-house with a 32 year old rb coach

Saban wins a NC, loses his OC and replaces him with a former NFL and College HC; twice

"I don't hire anybody unless they are smarter than I am. If they aren't I don't need them."

Bear Bryant
Thank you. Not sure what this has to do with my post focused on IF we'd have been better with Spurrier instead of Fulmer. Thanks for the info just the same.

Spurrier was a great HS, college player, good coach at Duke, great at UF, took SC to levels never achieved previously.

The sad part about Spurrier is that he can add quitter to his resume, he walked out on SC when he knew he was going to get his ass handed to him.

All is right in Spurriers world when he is winning and able to make jokes about his competition. The minute he faces adversity and knows he can’t win , he takes his ball and goes home..,,,,

Sorry didnt make myself clear. Just agreeing with you on your statement about Fulmer.

Fulmer's downfall was largely due to his ego, rigidity, and eventual laziness.

Fulmer was afraid to hire anybody that might overshadow him so he promoted not on ability but whoever would be in debt to him. He could have basically hired any OC in the country after winning the NC in 98 but he pissed it away due to his as you so accurately described, "ego, rigidity and eventual laziness."

I always thought 3 things happened in 2002 which let Fulmer down the wrong path.

1. Kelly Washington showed up, although he was a great talent, his lack of discipline was a tell tell for future Fulmer years, future cell phone in locker room at half, the Fulmer cup etc.,,
2. Loosing SEC championship to an overmatched LSU. IF we win that game, Fulmer is playing for his second natty in 4 years, would have never got fired, no matter if we win or loose against Miami.
3 Spurrier bolted for NFl. I believe this one thing has the greatest impact on Fulmer, until then, Fulmer could not let his guard down, after this, it appears the program became stale because Fulmer thought he could put it on cruise control,

However, I may be in the minority in believing that if Fulmer had been given one more year, he may have been able to get the team going in the right direction. I firmly believe he knew he had to get things straightened out quickly, however he waited a year too late to start. Fulmer had a great recruiting class going. Kiffin runs off the QB who started Clemsons surge and the rest is history.

Heard him say one time he was going to make changes after the 2002 season but, "somebody," talked him out of it. Now who the hell was somebody, Since Dickey was on the way to retirement and Hamilton was just moving to the ADs chair I have a sneaking suspicion that someone was Queen Vicky. The changes were undoubtedly Sanders and Pat Washington and maybe another offensive position coach. I'm sure it was entirely coincidental that Vicky and Washington;s wife were best buds.

No problem, and you're not wrong.

Mears knew talent when he saw it.

The last part of your statement is particularly telling. Between Joe Johnson & Donde Plowman the UTK administration ranged from complacent to disastrous. At the present time, it's going mighty fine.
Oh our administration is definitely great now. I was mainly referring the ADs from Hamilton up to, and not including, White.

Spurrier ingrained Beat UT at all cost while at UF . And UF still only practices for UT all year long in hopes of beating them UT is the only game they care about lol

Spurrier was only successful because he walked into a situation where the team was already loaded with talent and, in one of the top three talent rich states in the nation.

Had he took over Tennessee when Fulmer did, he may have not fared even better or, as well.

At the end of the day Spurrier has the same number of national championships as Fulmer despite having a better recruiting base and never went undefeated in a full season like Fulmer. Lucked out getting a second game in 96 against FSU.

Also never beat Butch Jones. Imagine having a Tennessee coach who was 0-2 against Butch. Embarrassing
Spurrier won 11 games 3 years in a row at South freaking Carolina. He was a much better coach than Fulmer.

lol. Yeah right. Spurrier took over in 1990. The 5 years prior to that here is UFs W/L record

89- (7-5)
88- (7-5)
87- (6-6)
86- (6-6)
85- (9-1)

Fulmer took over in 1992. Here is the previous 5 years before him:

91- (9-3)
90- (9-2-2)
89- (11-1)
88- (5-6)
87- (10–2-1)

Spurrier took over a much worse program.

I’ll take what we had at the time over Spurrier in his prime. He wouldn’t have been a great representative of this university. 0 class.

…would we be a better program today? Always think of this what if during Florida week. What if coach Dickey got here a year earlier and recruited Spurrier to play in a more modern offense? What if Spurrier came to UT as a two sport athlete? I imagine Spurrier might have been a UT fan and a Johnny Majors fan when he was a kid. What if Majors added Spurrier to has staff when he came home in 77? What if Spurrier took over as the head ball coach in the 90s and paired up with Shuler, Manning Martin and others without a Florida dynasty to worry about? Would he have have left the program in better shape after he left/retired? Would we have 2,3 or 4 more Natties? Would streets, buildings be named after him today?
If a Spurrier QB ran the ball out of bounds instead of throwing it with the clock at 00:00 I can guarantee you that QB would never see the field again. But, Spurrier was a great coach.

You can't spell "loser at South Carolina" without an SOS

Ultimately, he and Phil had the same amount of national championships. He would've probably "retired" earlier than Phil, but it's hard to say.
