If Tennessee defeats Oklahoma….

I would say still too early, but trending the right way. Oklahoma on the road would be the best win the team has so far. Chatt and Akron just weren’t any good and NC State looks mediocre at best, now we looked dominate against all 3 which if you’re really good is how you should look, but this is the real first challenge. Win this and you’re going the right way. But not ready to say they are better than 2022 or 2007.

Yeah, I fear that a bunch of our fans are about to get a look at what a good football team looks like on the road no less. The scrimmages are over. This Venables defense is not gonna be a knife through hot butter like we've seen so far. They are gonna give Nico the first real test of his career. This want be a bunch of 3 star talents half-assing it like Iowa in an exhibition game. This is gonna be fours and fives motivated by a stadium full of screaming fans. A one point win will be a great win.

Is it fair to say this team is the best the Vols have had since 2001 or is it too early still?

Side note - Pat Summitt is the best women’s basketball coach of all time, was good enough to be a men’s coach, and could easily have coached in the NBA. She left the world way too early.
The jury will be out on this team until we dispatch Jawga and Alabubbu, WGWTFA. Frankly most I know still view OU as a good OC game.

Truth is we think it could be that good for us, but we won’t know until Saturday. We haven’t been tested by a real team this season.

We have to wait until we play a good team to draw any conclusions

This doesn’t make sense. The question is…is this the best Vols team since 2001?

How many times since 2001 did we beat all three of those teams since 2001? And what was the final record?

As for the question, it is too early until we see the season results. But there is no doubt that this team is in consideration. So far, it looks the part.
That was then, this is now.

If Tennessee beats Oklahoma, a few years from now we'll look back on this day and say, "That was the last time TN was ranked outside the top 5."
If we trounce OU, the narrative will be "Well, OU probably didnt deserve to be the in the top 25 anyways. So who has TN played worth noting?" That will be the narrative until we get to Alabama.

I used to have this argument with my dad all the time in the 90s. He would say about Fulmer's teams, "Well, who have they really beaten? No one in the top 10 or top 15!" And my response was always, "Well once they beat someone, unless it's that team's only loss, they're not going to ranked in the top 15 anymore, and even with one loss it's hard to stay there." But he would still always say, "Who have they really beaten?" Absurd.

Im on the train that we make teams look worse than they are. With that being said, i dont think OU is a top 25 team at this moment in the season. I think their history of being a blue blood and having a decent defense is the only reason they are there. If you ask me, they remind me of Kentucky a few years ago back when they were ranked in the top 10.

Be funny if NC State rolls into Clemson this weekend and heads back to Raleigh with a W

Unsure why you're confused. He asked if after 4 games would this be the best team since 2001. I answered that at this point the 2022 team was better since we have no clue if the 24 team will actually beat anyone that matters. Hope that clears it up
Fair enough.

You're right, a team that beat uf and Bama then reached #1 is not better than one that beat nc st and ou. Brilliant and I see you put much thought into your reply
I think this team is better on defense, at this point in the season, than the 2022 defense was around this point. I fully expect our offense to look like the one in the Pitt game in 2022 this saturday. That offense didnt find its stride until the Florida game. Talent wise, this team is better on paper.

Huh? How would trouncing #15 Oklahoma put them on par with 2022? If you haven't heard the 2024 Vols have the greatest point differential in SEC history through 3 games. If we blow out Oklahoma that doesn’t just make us WAY BETTER than the 2022 team. It puts us one pace to become one of the best teams in SEC history.

This team is way better than 2022. And I would argue they're even better than the 1998 team let alone 2001 or any other Vols team in recent memory.
At this point you really think this team is better than our national championship team? Good God man I can usually tolerate some of your posts, but this is totally outlandish!

Let’s play out the season before we start making comparisons. One game at a time. Seasons are tough in the SEC, having said that if we stay confident but focused and grounded I like our chances at a great memorable season. GBO

Tennessee football every season will be measured by how we do against Bama, UGA, and da gatas. Anybody else who rolls up on our schedule we ought to beat on any given Saturday, no exceptions for the Horns and Sooners.
