Alright I have read and listened to enough bashers without speaking my mind. That is about to change. If you people think you know SOOOO much then why are you sitting behind the computer and not an AD at some college? I will be honest I wasn't the happiest person when I heard who our hire was, but I am a VFL and I am going to support CBJ all the way. I am aware that opinions are like rear ends and everyone has one, but sometimes it's taken a little too far. I am a student at UT and I can probably say I have more invested in this than most of you unless your related or close friends to a coach or player. If you have a negative opinion, then do the NC.Vols a favor and don't type it for the world to see. I am 100% certain that maybe not all, but a portion of parents of future players check these message boards and I personally wouldn't want a child to play for a fan base that's all in one minute and lacking support the next. If you feel the best thing for you is to not attend games next season then don't go. That's your right as a citizen, but don't bash the team or coaches before you even see the product that is displayed on the field. I am ALL VOL and I hope you are as well. GO VOLS!
So well stated DJCHRIS!!!! There is no room for "fair-weather-fans" (FWF's)if any program wants the chance to win and possibly get shots at big time championships. This is truer than ever right now considering the juncture where the future status of our team (along with teams to come) finds its possibilities quite up in the air. I was not fond of Hamilton, but not a day passed that I didn't find myself wishing him all the best in "getting the worm turned." The same is true for Dooley. My blood runs orange no matter what.
I am not familiar very much with Hart, but I grieved for him in dealing with the Dooley decision as well as the many bumps in the road I knew awaited him as he ventured out to try and lure the equivalent of a seasoned Bear Bryant or Nick Saban. I knew with 100% certainty that such a goal didn't even merit one night of pleasant dreaming because a lot has changed since the glory days of our 1998 NC. And, those of you among us who are (FWF's) are more responsible for the "bumps" Hart had to deal with than any employee at UT!!
To drive this point home, peruse the negative comments and invectives about this hire being hurled around on this and other sites. I figure that around 90% of all comments I've seen drip with nothing but negativity and virtually all of it is baseless, at least for the time being.
Why do I bring this up? Because other coaches and potential star recruits read these horrid and destructive postings with the same curiosity and lack of honed critical reading skills as the "quick fix dreamers" who keep on spewing them out. The ultimate saddness about this is that one reading by the types of players needed here (and coaches) results in each of them to scratch UT off of their lists of possible places to inspect in order to make time to more closely examine the myriad number of other possibilities begging for their services.
I personally feel that CPF's demise came about more as a result of these web sites wherein FWF's choose to go and do their venting. Staying in the hunt was no longer viable for him once more and more needed high quality players started checking out the fan base's thoughts about him. (Such is lethal for a university that must recruit from one end of the nation to the other.) Just take a look at the downward overall trend that our recruiting suffered from in correlation to the explosion of this technology where disgruntled fans could go for psychological therapy by painting our program as some sort of horrendous shame deserving of as much venom carried in the fangs in the snakes the same people played with at church on Sundays.
Do we really want a revival of Tennessee football? Getting there shouldn't be that difficult if we come together as true Vol fans and fill these sites with positive comments. Doing that shouldn't be so difficult. UT, this month, will have completed constuction of a new "state-of -the- art" athletic facility unsurpassed by any other university in the country. We have just hired a new coach who on day one came off as impressive as any new hire I have viewed at any place in any point of time. Let's embrace him, welcome him, and support him each time we mention his name. Doing so will up his chances of getting UT football in the mix by at least 50% because recruiting will become much easier. Diss him and you won't do anything at all except make it right next to impossible to recruit the kinds of players he knows he will have to have if UT is to shine as it should and is supposed to in the SEC.
So please, if you are a "fair weather fan," look around for a team you can live with that had a double digit winning season this year. Cuddle up to that team and post on its sites. As long as the team doesn't cycle into a less than stellar period of time, I am sure you would receive the warmest of welcomes. If you find that not to be plausible, make room for true fans on UT sites, and refrain from posting negative spleen. The SEC is already tough enough; please don't make it more so, if not impossible, to compete in with posts hastily constructed from emotions of frustrated ire. Remember! People who really count and have the talent to get UT back in the mix read what you write. Please don't run them off.
Of course, another option is to become a true fan that bleeds orange through THICK or thin. Also, praise and welcome our new coach with enthusiasm. If that proves to be undeserved along the line, the matter will take care of itself with or without you. Your only role in such a process will have been contributing to how swiftly he proved to be undeserving. Once we get a fan base of around 90% of such folks, pulling for the Vols no matter what, our heads will swim with how quickly we got back into the mix.
