If we lose to Vanderbilt...

If we lose to Vanderbilt, will you still say the coaches did a good job this season?

Only the most determined excuse maker could even remotely consider less than six wins a "good" job by this staff. Six wins is lukewarm and does little if anything to prove these guys are a good staff.

Recruiting is a necessary component... but it isn't "coaching". Coaching shows up regardless of talent level.
It's game by game. You could say this staff did an excellent job in the UGA and Carolina game. The South Alabama game was not great. No matter how much you preach about kids buying in, some are not going to. Hard to evaluate a staff one way or another when they're working with a program that has been screwed by several years of incompetence.

You are right UT will finish 4-6th in the SEC in recruiting, probably. So if CBJ can't take a more talented team and beat Vandy and Ky this year why would anybody really believe that he will be able to take a lesser talented team and beat the more talented Ga, USCe, Bama, AU teams in the future?
I wish Bama had the same mindset when Saban lost to UAB his first year there.

If we lose to Vanderbilt on Saturday, will you still say the coaches did a good job this season?

Simple question. Just curious where our standards are at this point.

If we lose to Vandy on Saturday, they can make fun of us all year because they prevented us from going to a bowl game....

That is a horrible thought. At least for me it is a horrible thought. My wife is a nurse at the Vanderbilt Hospital.......

I will have to wait 364 days for us to redeem ourselves.

The UGA team that lost to Vandy is pretty much the same team that was on the field in the 2nd half against UT. A game in which UT led with under 2 minutes to go. I wouldn't call that a great coaching job other than he lit a fuse in his team at halftime.

Any coach worth a damn has to be able to motivate his team and Jones did in that instance. He just couldn't get them to close the deal.

We all know what Oregon thinks, he makes it very clear. I stated that this is a push poll which is essentially what have said here. He isn't asking a sincere question to get feedback. He's making a statement.

You don't know me well enough to speak to my motivations. I'm actually not interested in a debate right now. I actually do want to know where people stand on this before the game is final. We have alot of people on here who will take results and use them as a kind of circular logic. Like the guy I was talking to earlier this week who said that the UT coaches didn't have any talent to coach and that he knew this because they kept getting blown out.

I feel like I know how a Vanderbilt loss will go down. Like most bad losses, a thin majority of posters on here will be upset for a day or two and then the excuses will start overwhelming the board. They'll say that we didn't have enough talent to beat Vanderbilt anyway and the proof they will offer is that we lost to Vanderbilt. So, before all logic goes out the window, I thought I could take the pulse of folks here, before the game.

On the other hand, I am interested in seeing how many posters' standards are so low that a losing season with a loss to Vanderbilt still represents a "good" coaching job at Tennessee.

Have the balls to make the statement without a poll, Man up.

This is just a thread to stir the masses and mob mentality. Undercuts progress with no authority to make the change.

Accomplishes nothin except arguments that can go both ways.

Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances as to why one fails, but an F is and F. Not making a bowl and losing to Vandy should score an F on any reasonable measurement.

I didn't realize we were here for "progress". I thought this was a discussion forum.

What statement am I making? It's a simple question.

Agree. Even though I have been and continue to be a believer and supporter of Butch, I am already disappointed in the staff's performance this year based on our inability to even compete the last 3 weeks alone. Winning the last 2 games ensures that this season is not a 4-8 disaster.

I believe Butch gets us back to competing for titles in the future but its based on faith, his ability to recruit and his track record as a winning coach at his 2 previous schools... not hard empirical evidence from this team's performance. Just is what it is.

I believe in Jones (at least for now). I am still neutral on Jake. I am leaning against Jancek.

I am coming to believe his future success does not hinge on recruiting. He looks to be exceptional there. He has a personality that's magnetic to young guys.

I believe his success or failure rests on his ability and willingness to hold his staff accountable, correct them, and make changes as necessary. This is something that does and should happen behind closed doors. He would only set a coach up for failure by publicly questioning his performance... but I sure would like to know what he is privately saying to Jancek right now.

NO! We have the players and talent to win out and go bowling and no excuse not to.

I agree 100%!!! I think it's inevitable that we are going to have to upgrade some coaching positions to compete with the big boys. Everyone knows u have to have a dominant d line to win games or the ones that matter anyways

If we lose to Vandy, this senior class will be remembered as one of the worst in the program's history, fair or not and despite having some future NFL players.

1 bowl game;
3 consecutive losing seasons;
2-2 against Vanderbilt;
0-4 against Alabama;
0-4 against Florida;
broke the streak against UK.

You kind of backed me into a corner with only two choices. I would more inclined to give a scale of 1 to 5 answer.

If they win out, I'd give them a 4. If they drop either of the last two, I'd give them a 2. But if forced after a loss to VU, I'd say "bad." Only because it would be a significant set back compared to the ideal and a failure to meet their own goals.

That doesn't mean - necessarily - that they are bad coaches. Coaches learn on the job and adapt to circumstances just like players.

We'll know more about their true nature in another year or two.

Vanderbilt is a good team with solid coaching that has been consistent. Our program is with it's first year coach, a Lost recruiting class, recruiting sanctions we were just let off of, 4 coaches in 5 years and not to mention all the different assistants. We have players that were recruited for a different style of play suited more for the big ten. Coach jones loves UT, he is passionate, all the players have bought into his system, they play hard, and despite everything he has against him, including the fans, he has the number 1 recruiting class for next year. We went into this season knowing we were starting at the bottom and had no expectations. He beat a ranked team and almost two ranked teams in his first year. Not to mention we lost all our offensive weapons from last year. Regardless of this season this coach has done a hell of a job and I promise u, just As all VFLs know, UT will be perennial top 10 soon. Butch isn't a good, but great coach. Look at the little things. How the fundamentals of certain players have excelled. If you notice all the young players, sophomore and freshman have progressed each week. That's becausee they r fresh. The seniors have done well but due to horrific coaching, they have 4 years of habits instilled in them that can't change in 9 months. Nuff said. Go big orange
