If you could change the outcome of ONE play...

The truly important plays, from an historical perspective, have already been identified, so I would love to change the outcome of Florida's field goal attempt in the 1990 game. That way we would have shut out the Reptilian Horde 45-0.

Rohan Daveyeing knocked out as well..that was my da actionwhen I sw the topic. We win one more championship if that had not happened.. and we probably change the entire future of UT football on that play.
Second is Pig's fumble last yr. I dont fault the guy trying to make a play. But if he scored we are in a bowl, and pressure is much less for Butch this year.

How so, UTVOLKeith? Don't you take pleasure in shutting out a rival? I qualified my remarks by reference to the fact that the truly important plays, from an historical perspective, had already been mentioned. I could have agreed with the nomination of Kevin Burnette's two hits which knocked out LSU's starting quarterback and tailback in the 2001 SEC Championship Game, but what would that have really added to the discussion?

I have a theory that had we beaten UGA, we would have lost to USCe. I obviously have no facts to back this up because it's all hypothetical...but I don't think we had the maturity last year to win 2 big games in a row like that.

dude seriously?

That was a TD no way to overturn it.

Butch gets a win for that in my mind

UGA "hob nailed boot" game in 2001. Spurrier had bolted to the NFL, so it was UT & Fulmers time to take control of the East. Instead, new UGA HC Mark Richt took he upset & filled the vacuum that most felt was UTs to fill. I truly believe this was the start of our downward trajectory.

About 2 months too early. That game was LSU and we haven't been the same since.

If we had scored there we beat UGA and we have the momentum for fast start instead of them...

Now that you mention it, there was a muffed punt that Georgia recovered for a safety which finally sparked their comeback. Up to that point, the Bulldogs trailed 15-0 and were dead in the water. Walker had a fine inaugural performance in the second half, including that touchdown run in which he left tire tracks on Bill Bates' chest, but, without that muffed punt, it might have been too little, too late for Georgia to pull off the victory. Gault was our primary punt returner that year, but I believe that Bill may have been the unfortunate recipient of that punt.

This thread is bringing up anger that I long ago buried...

If it makes you feel any better, I'd extend the width of Neyland's playing field by 12 inches so John Capel doesn't step out of bounds on that KO return in '98.

See also Terry Jackson's fumble on the 1 yard line.

As painful as both of those plays were, neither holds a candle to Lindsay Scott in 1980.

Jay Graham's first fumble in the 95 Florida game in the 2nd half. We were ahead by a lot and Peyton was rolling in that game up to that point.

UT was only up 30-28 at that point, but UT was driving to score. If UT goes up 37-28 they probably win the game. That fumble started the downhill snowball that UT couldn't stop.

Spurrier was still at UF in 2001. We also made it to the SEC Championship game even with the GA loss.

Have Ainge take a knee before halftime against Notre Dame. I think that while Tennessee was probably on the beginning of a decline, we could have plateaued and held onto 8-10 win range if Ainge stays healthy, Ainge getting hurt and his loss of confidence sent us over the cliff the next year in 2005. We bounced back but I don't think we ever recovered from that season.
