If You Could Have

How on earth are you going to put that on Kiffin? Crompton was a headcase before the Georgia game. I do think that they eventually helped him out, but it took 5 or 6 games to do it. It was the same thing in the Florida game. I just don't see how that's being outcoached. If a guy can't hit a receiver on a slant route from 6 yards, there's not much you can do about that.

You say that Crompton can't hit a 6 yard slant, but he was more accurate than Prince that day. If he can't hit a 6-yard slant, don't call that play.

Look, Tennessee got beat by a team that went 3-6 in the PAC 10 with a freshman QB (in his 2nd game) at Neyland. I don't know how you can put that on anybody but the coach. We didn't need Crompton to throw 26 times to win that game. We got 3 picks and a loss because of it. Crompton is what he is, you have to coach around it. Just like Chow did.

Kiffin did stop calling it, and we lost the game b/c of our inability to throw the ball... e.g. anytime we were in the red zone in the second half. People can get mad all they want about the playcalling on the goal line, but Kiffin didn't have a lot of other options.

I'm just saying that Saban or Meyer or any other "great" coach couldn't have done much with Crompton at that point in the season. As mediocre as Prince was, he was still better than Crompton.

He was better than Crompton at that time because he was coached better.

Nobody is talking about the 4th and goal. That play would have been completely irrelevant had we been patient and not thrown the ball down field earlier for 3 picks. UCLA had an unproven QB. They babied him. We had an unproven QB and Kiffin was calling the game like Ainge was still around. Kiffin learned his lesson and babied Crompton until he got his feet under him. Notice how we were down by 17 at one point against Florida and Crompton only had 19 attempts in the whole game? Yeah, CLK learned that from Chow.
