I'm baffled. Help me understand how LSU was ranked higher than UT going into the season?

Why was LSU ranked #5 and UT #10/12 going into this season?

Look, not saying LSU deserved #5 but we lost our QB and top 2 WRs that were basically our entire offense last year. We got gutted. Our#12 ranking is totally understandable and we have plenty of time to rise up.

LSU being that high was not quite as baffling as Clemson being ranked higher than us given we beat them handedly with our current starting QB. Turns out that was a joke. We'll at least be 10th come tomorrow.

Literally everyone loves Brian Kelly and I don't get it. Go and look at his big games at Notre Dame. He doesn't jus lose he gets blown out. 10/12 big games he had at Notre Dame were blow out loses. He will never win the big game. But for some reason everyone sees him as top 5 coach in country. Truly mind blowing

He's obviously a good coach and develops programs to compete nationally. MHO is that he's not that great of a game day coach. Yes, he's a bit overrated

Honestly brother I just let the first 2-3 weeks of rankings go. Everything is a guess. LSU has the pcs to be good. They got curb stomped, and worse so yes by us last year but that doesn’t really necessarily affect what pundits think they’d do this season. They finished strong last year. Honestly I hope they put it together so they can keep Saban out of ATL again with our help obviously. Give you an example, should Colorado get credit for a Top 25 win? Well prolly not cuz TCU got a courtesy Top 25 ranking since they “played” for the NC even though they really didn’t have a fighters chance in that game. But pieces will fall into place over the first few weeks of the season so I just ignore it. Your frustration is understandable but voters will be wrong sometimes. Maybe they’re wrong about the Tigers, maybe the CrimiNoles are just better than everyone thought.

Volanatic - I too really could give two S**** about rankings till way into the season. My thread was not about being upset about our rankings (in fact, I have extolled for years and years that I would just assume be unranked or in the 20-25 range preseason or early in the season because it means we are under the radar and have plenty to shoot for) but rather just wanting to hear from my friends on VN what their collective thoughts are on "how" LSU got ranked over us. Right now, looks like ALL ABOVE is edging out Brian Kelly vs Coach Hype by a slim margin - so am comforted that there wasn't a rash of OTHERS promoting some unknown cockamamie explanations. Go Vols!

Explain to us why it matters.

I don't pay attention to polls till typically the last couple weeks of the season, for up until playoff time, they are just an abstract measurement. LSU being ranked ahead of us in preseason though just didn't seem to add up. I could care less that they were ranked ahead of us if there were solid reasons but, for the life of me, 2 + 2 just didn't add up to 4 in this case. Therefore, I wanted to see what other VN members thought on this incongruity. In essence, I have an inquisitive mind. Hope that is ok????

I feel like LSU is kind of like the Notre Dame of the SEC. They are always going to be high in preseason polls based solely on the fact they are LSU.

Other---I think some of the factors contributed, but 2 things play the biggest role.
1. A lot of the pundits bought in last year and had Tennessee ranked #1 in the country and even after the uga loss, a lot of them had us to make the playoffs until the south carolina game. I think there is going to be some hesitation until Heupel proves his staying power.
2. We aren't recruiting top 5 recruiting classes yet and until we are, that will play a role.
None of it matters though if we win.

Truly, this is a head scratcher. The Noles played a solid 4 quarter game last night and ran away w the prize in the second half - leaving Coach Kelly in a pretty fowl mood about their performance. We embarrassed the Tigers in Baton Rouge and had a better record in 2022. We beat Clemson handily in the Orange Bowl and LSU beat Purdue in the Cheez It Citrus Bowl - who btw, lost Saturday to Fresno State at HOME on Saturday. How/why did LSU earn/deserve the #5 spot?

I do not have the answer but, have provided a few options as to why the poll voters thought so much more highly of LSU vs UT. If you think it is something other than those options, than please chime in because this one just has me baffled.

And w a long way to go this season, who knows of these poll prognosticators could be 100% accurate? This is a now question, not a later question. Happy Labor Day Vol Fans!!
Ton of talent and a known, talented QB returning. Not hard.

But, but, but what about Clemson too. They have an All-American bench warmer coming up. We kicked their azz last game out, kicked LSU's azz also and both are above us. Go Figure....

Crap for OL, no running game, receivers with hands of stone, overrated DL got 0 sacks vs. FSU, top 3 CBs with no SEC experience, and special teams woes from last year still not fixed. Sure, let's just all agree it's a top 5 team. Why not.
