I'm going to be critical for a moment

3-4 defense....so we will not need as many DTs

However we came up short.

Our scheme is different now, we needed more LB bodies and some of the ends that we have may end up as LB/DE hybrids.

Different scheme, thus we need different players.

We'll be OK

And we aren't done yet

I think everyone is getting a little too worried about not picking up some huge DTs. If we switch to a 3-4 D we will be fine. Look at what the Pittsburgh Steelers did for years with undersized D linemen. They used smaller, quicker guys and it worked out well for them. You can't say it will not work in the SEC because it works in the NFL. You also can't say that the steelers had top draft picks on the D line because the best player on that D line was not even drafted.

Sab, i enjoyed your 'Twas the night before' blog,,,,, I couldn't tell you weren't high on Sapp. Next time make it plainer - lol.

Have to go with the real evaluators (no offense) on these two. Its a lottery pick for sure either going their way or yours.

If kiffen would have been here UT would only gotten the kid that went to UNC, and maybe Smith that went N. Mexico. We all know how we got screwed on the night kiffen left, just before EE's were to enroll. DT's are by far the most competitive areas of recruiting, besides QB. UT will be fine. JC's will be recruited next year, I would bet UT takes two jucos at DT in 2011. DD's hands were tied, he got what he got.

Surprised that Orgeron didn't have more dt's looking our way before he left. LB's are nice to have but if our DT's are crap we could have 3 Ray Lewis' and all 3 of them would suck.

I don't see how in the heck we can spend scholarships on guys like Crump and Sapp, but we can't get more than 1 (and not a definite qualifier) defensive tackle to commit. The second biggest need on the team.

Unless you have been to these kids schools and recruited them yourself, you don't really know what they are capable of, they might end up being great ball players or they might be good practice guys or good motivators and leaders. A coach just doesnt throw out $250,000+ schollies to anyone. These kids had to earn it and had to be worth it. There are a lot of HS football players dieing to get a call from UT, these kids must have something Dooley and the other coaches want in a player.

I gonna respect the coaches decision and hope these guys turn out to be stars for the University of Tennessee!

Go VOLS!

I think Sapp beefs up and moves to OLB later. He'll be fine. He's my sleeper out this class.

No guarantee that Wilcox will run a 3-4. They are talking multiple 40, which is mutliple sets with 4 down lineman. In that case we would need DT's.

However, Wilcox has also been known to change things up from the norm...see the 3-2-6 defense he put in against TCU. So he may look at a 3-4 given the personnel we have on board at this point.

....Someone help me out here. Regarding USC signee Seantrell Henderson, USA Today's David Moore writes that "Henderson's parents plan to move to Los Angeles to be near their son." Now, unless the Henderson's are in a special situation to be able to make such a move, how does one suppose that might be accomplished? The cost of living is substantially higher in the LA area, as opposed to St. Paul, MN. The job market is not exactly conducive to making a upwardly mobile move, as well. Yet, miracles DO happen, do they not? Would it not be astonishing to see the Henderson's "thrive" in their new surroundings? We all know that CLK is highly ethical, has vowed to run a clean program, and would never tolerate another Reggie Bush type situation at USC, right? Does anyone think that this move should be watched carefully....by someone?

Absolutely. The AA goons should be all over this one.

Just stop with the 3-4 not needing as many DTs. We don't have the personnel to run that scheme at all.

That's the POINT! We should have those positions filled by now! If we hire Chuck Smith this week I will be TICKED because he has wanted to be here for the last 2 WEEKS! He could have helped seal the deal on Copeland....

The coach and players can live with you being ticked.

Here's my take on the DT position....

1. No DL Coach
2. NO DC
3. Even if you find someone that's a body, just taking a DT versus a LB is very dangerous. If you take a DT a put him on scholly, and they don't have the motor to play, then you screwed yourself twice over.
4. They only had 2 weeks to recruit, and we lost Copeland to the home school. I would be irate if we had lost him to USuCk.
5. It's also not like Orgeron had much luck either. We would have had Willis and Copeland for sure, but there's still a possibility that Brown wasn't going to qualify in the first place. Which still leaves us sucking hind tit on the D-Line. Would have been a little better, but it wasn't solving our issue either.

timing, relationships, no DL coach, no DC.

being able to get Crump and Sapp is a tremendous accomplishment along with a # 9 class. This blows away the efforts of previous staff last year.

doesn't satisfy needs but this could have been a disaster. When Kiffin blew town, I was thinking a 25-30 class ranking.... so it could have, and probably should have, been much worse.

I am absolutely amazed at the judgemental audacity of some of the posters here. I mean the coach has been here three weeks. Surely we all knew that we would wind up thin somewhere. Did we get everything we wanted? NO I can understand being disappointed but please don't come on the board acting like you have more knowledge of what was available out there in that amount of time, that you could have done a better job, or that you could have assembled the staff more efficiently. Not only do some come on here griping about what we missed but also already downgrading the people we picked up before they have ever played a down or even put on a helmet for us. For those of you who are choosing to do this, hopefully you can be prejudged in your next important endeavor of your life as well.

I am very happy about the job that this staff has done in consideration of the shape our program was left in. Not only did they have to get new kids but battle the attack from our old coach for the kids who had already committed.

At this point, I would think we would all want to be sending the message of Welcome, Good Luck, Represent our beloved program well, Hope that each and every one of your names are remembered in the UT annals as champions on the field as well as in the classrooms and communities that you represent.

But that's just one man's opinion.:)

I think most everyone is happy with the outcome. We've got a dozen or more 'happy' threads. Let us have this one thread to talk about what could be better.

The problem at DT is not all CDD's fault, and it's not a new concern. It's a few years old now. That's where the frustration lies. Add to that... DT's are a must to compete for championships in the SEC.

It's been a recruiting priority for a while... for good reason.

I'm good with that just not good with the "there had to be better out there than we got" mentality. I agree strongly that we have a need I believe on both sides of the ball on the line but I also appreciate what we have and the guys who have recently put their names on the LOI's that will fill some of these needs. I think we will pick up a few more before we start the season though and I think next year, because more time and emphasis can be placed there then we should see a line heavy recruitment period.

If I'm not mistaken, we still actually have 3 or 4 scholarships for this year because they were going to be able to backcount enough to where we should have been able to sign 30 (counting the EE's) at least that is what I heard on a couple of radio shows. Hopefully we can pick up a couple of more quality lineman since we have the space.

Hope so. :hi:

L.A. real estate prices are almost impossible unless:

1) You're a billionaire;
2) You're already from Cali.

Crump and Sapp did not take scholarships away from any DTs, so I'm not sure what your point is. We have two spots left.

I'd like to see a Crump or Sapp-like DT project sign this month. My hope is the two FNGs (CJW and Smith) find who they want out of the talent left, and get an OV set up.

My thoughts perzactly! :good!:

And we're at a total of 81 scholarships if all 25 signees qualify, so we have room there too.
