I'm going to be critical for a moment

Here are the weights of the two-deep Boise St d-line: 263, 241, 288, 254, 296, 332, 271 (3rd string nose), 262, 259. Of those 9 players, 1 Jr, 5 So, 3 Fr.
And the 332 was second string and listed at 6' tall. They held up ok. Is it completely out of the question for the UT d-line to do the same? This is all assuming that Wilcox will be the next DC, hence the Boise State example.

Ummm...HELLO???? They didn't play an SEC schedule either. Good night! Did you really just make this statement???

Something you probably did not know...

Alabama, LSU, Clemson, MSU, Kentucky, Southern Miss, Memphis and Ole Miss signed 17Tennessee Recruits and 8 of them were Lineman, 4 LB's all 3* or better with exception of 4 recruits..

Not even counting Vandy and I did not want too do more research..

WOW!! I think we have enough here in state to improve oue line situations...JMO

Tn. signed 2 Tennessee players total....

The in-state DL in this year's class wouldn't have improved the talent of our DL. Just the depth.

Sab I gotta agree with you 100% on this.

Whiffing on DTs is not acceptable. Not hiring C Smith was a mistake. Hes going to end up being hired anyway, and hiring EVERY other defensive position without a DC but DL is stupid.

And giving Dooley credit for LSUs recruiting is going a little far. He may have been the recruiting co ordinator but dont get it mixed, Saban was the animal that made those classes.

IF you think a quality staff can be assembled in two and a half weeks, you are deluded.

Lord, forgive me for what I am about to say....but....I believe a former coach here got it done. And my point was...Chuck Smith WANTS to be here...he should have been hired already if we are going to do it in a few days.

They don't?? Really? Well, they held their own against TCU and Oregon. Who in the SEC, outside of Alabama, has a real smashmouth OL?

You didn't just compare playing UGA, UF, UA, Auburn, and LSU to TCU and Oregon did you? Seriously?

Not out of the question but a completely different ballpark trying to hold up in the SEC. In the SEC even a great starting DLine isn't good enough, need a great DLine with good backups. We are going to have a tough year because of the schedule, lack of depth, implementing a new system likely, and breaking in some new starters a key positions. I think realistically we are looking at a 6 win season at best.

So you're assuming here that Marlon Walls and Arthur Jefferey aren't worth a damn? Plus Hughes looked pretty good last year, not to mention we could have some other players that the coaching staff plan on making DTs. Plus if we're going to be running the 3-4, we dont need a ton of DTs. All i'm saying is, give the guy a chance to prove himself before ripping him.

SAb is so right....You win in this league on the defensive front seven period

Thats why we drill Texas,Okla,Ohio State and most any other conference leader. We r better on the DL and Lb.. It is really not a debatable issue, IMO.

Right now we r Scary thin in the DL, and have had trouble really since Haynesworth and Henderson as far as being dominant at that position...

So you don't think that Boise State could have beaten 75-80% of the SEC this year? Aside from Florida and Alabama, who would have been favored against them?

Looking back at the last 3 classes, UT has only taken 1 DT in each class. WOW!

If you look at the top teams in the country over the last 3 classes they have all taken at least 3 DT in each class. That is a rotation of at least 9 DTs.

This is a glaring need and will hurt the future depth.

Montori Hughes is all UT has at the DT position.

oh,, I dont know, DD only had 3 weeks and we hadnt signed a DL coach or a DC. Im very happy about how it all turned out.

He had time enough to recruit 9 players to be Vols and most weren't even in our area code 3 weeks ago.

I'm not complaining about our haul at LB or OL. I'm talking exclusively about the DT position here.

I never understood the full story, hippy lettuce, whatever, but I really liked Langley. Wish he had made it.

Not if they played 8 SEC opponents in 11 Weeks, I absoloutly do not. In fact I think they maybe a 7-5 Football team.. GET A GRIP MAN!!!

They can get up for a game against Oregon and Then the BCS, but can they get up and play at that level game in and game out .IMO no way!!!

If you don't have a DC in place it kind of circumvents his authority. Most DCs want control of who their staff is going to be. I can understand retaining existing staff but you don't hire a whole defensive staff then a DC. If they knew who was going to be DC and he wanted Chuck then I agree it doesn't make sense but I don' think the DC was a done deal.

It took X longer to put his staff together than Dooley also. You also have to consider the timing.

I'm not complaining about who we lost. Not complaining about Copeland. And I'm also not saying that there should have been a rush to hire a DC or a DL. I think we will be happy there.

I'm simply saying that if he could find "gems" like Crump and Sapp and think they were deserving of a scholarship then surely there were DTs out there willing to come here.

So I'll ask you. Outside of Florida and Alabama, who in the SEC would have been favored against Boise State?

UGA (when they run the ball as they did against GT and TX A&M), LSU, and probably Auburn. And they had to play the ENTIRE schedule the cumulative effect would have taken it's toll. In the SEC I think they were an 8-4 MAYBE 9-3.

You can't say, "I'm gonna recruit and sign X DTs" and then it just be so. You recruit. You offer. If they don't come in, you move on. Yes, DT is a glaring need, but this isn't xbox, where if you don't like you're recruiting results for the week, you can mash reset and try again.

Boise is very well coached and they are good at developing their players. However, we will never know for sure because the BCS had them play TCU so regardless of how the game went no one knows for sure if they can hang with the power conferences. I'm not high on the pac-10 but oregon was a big victory for boise. That said the SEC is not the pac-10, and we are far better than the pac-10. I think that bama, florida, tenn, ole miss, lsu, and maybe even south carolina could have taken boise. Nothing against them we just have very talented coaches in the sec and our caliber of athletes is a few notches above.

Edit: and i left out auburn and uga accidently. pretty much the whole conference lol.

First off, no one said anything about the ability of the guys we have.

Arthur Jefferey is probably moving to guard.

Marlon Walls and Montori Hughes do not make a very good DT rotation.
