Disappointing though that 3 SEC teams we beat this year are still ahead of us (KY, MO and SC). Hope we finish strong.

I see nothing that warrants optimism in recruiting. Only three 4* recruits. We trail USC, UK, AR, and MO. AL and UGA have 6X more 4-5* recruits. That's not 6 more but 6X more. No way we will compete with those programs unless recruiting improves dramatically. Heupel has to do better. Hopefully, he will.

Sampson
White
Miller are all 4 stars on different services as well.
Webb and Williams we look to add soon, and they are both 4 stars. Which would put us at 8 total.
Desmond Williams is a prime DB prospect out of JUCO

Remember there is the transfer portal as well.
Your team talent really depends on development and RETENTION. Not just getting them there.
Let it play out. We've added some very nice pieces to the puzzle.

Should do much better next year.

No offense, but statistically speaking, maybe you should.

College players get drafted based on their ability and performance in college, yes? So.....

Last 4 years combined:
***** 84/126 were drafted. 67%
**** 269/1096 were drafted. 25%
*** 409/5461 were drafted. 7%
** or unranked 115/5600 were drafted. 2%

There's a lot of 3* players in the NFL for one reason: There's 5x more of them than 4 and 5*'s put together.

Everyone has their own favorite underachieving 5* and overachieving 3* that they like to throw out, but the facts are the facts. Every time we get a 4* recruit, he has 3.5x more probability to develop into a NFL caliber player than a 3*. Every time we get a 5* recruit, he has 10x more probability of developing into a NFL caliber player than a 3*. That's why I get excited when I see a higher ranked player commit to us, and that's why every SEC or National Championship team in the modern era has had more 4 and 5*'s in their two deep than 3*'s.

I'm sure our coaches would prefer more certainty with higher ranked guys, but Tennessee just can't pull the higher ranked players on a consistent basis right now. They are recruiting who they think we have a chance with. Some consistent success on the field can and will change that IMO, because Tennessee continues to show out when recruits get on campus.

I love Coach Heupel and really believe he can get us to where we are competing for Championships again, but to have a consistent shot at the big boys, we need a higher talent level. Embrace the facts and let us enjoy gazing.

I do think there's a good chance this staff adds 3-5 higher ranked guys (4* or above) in this recruiting cycle, as well as a few highly ranked transfers.

On the OP list, it looks like 19 FIVE Stars have committed. There are usually around 30 FIVE Stars per year. Your post said 126 Fives last 4 years so 126/4 = 31.5 per year. So looks like there are 11 more or so to split between UGA, Bama & Ohio State, A&M and maybe LSU & Notre Dame.

And the Great classes UT has had on paper turned out to be sh!+.
How many average looking girls in HS are now knockouts?

We haven’t exactly had great coaches. We had good recruiters, that’s about it.

THIS^
and I was watching Burns on SECNET and he said I think going from memory one of the SEC schools had up to 60 seniors counting Super Seniors and I think he said Missouri had over 40, I think he mentioned LSU which he is alumni, and Kentucky had over 40. He thinks there will be a mass exodus of Seniors this Spring leaving some middle-of-the-pack teams scrambling.

Folks, the ENTIRE point of this thread is that we've improved from #38, hopefully we continue to improve. Geeze! We've had coaches in recent memory that get us a top 10 recruiting class and couldn't do crap on the field. Some people act like it's 4 and 5 stars or bust. During the last game, we had two gentlemen (vol fans) who sat behind us, the entire game, they loudly proclaimed how crappy we as a team are. Many of you act like them.

Some people love to wallow in misery, but then again, we've been accustomed to it for years now, so it's harder for some to jump out of it.

CJH is just approaching his 1st full year of coaching and recruiting at UTK.

You're the type that would be disappointed if you had won the lotto but it took them several weeks to get you paid.

Relax

With the exception of Georgia, we not only competed with, but beat all the teams listed.

Last year's recruiting class finished 23 and was nothing stellar, but there were difference makers in it that contributed this year.

I agree that recruiting has to improve if we want to get back to championship caliber football, but I don't think this class was ever going to set the world on fire. The transfer portal is another odd development, as you can really secure a stud or two that change your fortunes in some ways.

Overall, I agree with you, but I also guess I just agree with a little more optimism. Haha.

How closely do you follow recruiting? To your point we have to do better I agree but he has plenty stacked against him currently. We’re trending the right way with several guys, just have to see how we finish.

2 players from the the state of Tennessee committed right now, just as many as Michigan and Georgia. Our state is obviously producing quality players as other teams are coming in the taking them out of state. Not knocking our staff but it seems the old days of Tennessee High Schools doesn't have the talent is over.

The other way to look at it is that Alabama is simply replacing what they are loosing. They don't get richer necessarily.

My point is that the transfer portal will never be our savior, because the top teams get their pick first.

JH has to start getting getting his recruiting classes in the top 5-10 before the team will ever be top tier again.

So please correct me if I have misinterpreted, but 6 other SEC schools have 6x the number of 4-5* commitments to TN’s 3? 6X 3 = 18 and that averages out to 3 recruits per team. Same as TN?
