In Regards to the Ryan Williams Holding

I didn't like the face mask call on us when the Bama dude has his hands all up in the the Vol's grill first. At the least should have been called on both.
I can get on board on that one. However, the runner is always gonna benefit in that situation. 95% of the time the runner will get more leniency on stiff arms/hands to the face.

Calls are going to be missed. I am happy if the calls are balanced, meaning holding both teams to the same standard. The last few games before Bama, it seemed UT was only getting the bad calls especially on big plays. I hate a tic tak call on a big play if you don't call none on the other team. But the refs were not afraid to flag Bama, so I didn't see any vagrant bias. Maybe without Saban in their ear, they were not afraid to throw them now. That fiar catch last year against Bama was bad, and the no hold on the TD pass getting them back in the game. This year very different in my opinion. They could have called Boo for the hand swing also to a offsetting penalty. There were a couple others that UT got away with.
The couple bad calls I thought against UT was: The offsides on UTs D in the 1st Quarter was bad since the play clock had run out (they seemed to give bama an extra second before calling delay of game all night). And Bama didn't get that 4th and 1.

You can call holding on ANY football play. Pass, Run, Kick Off Return, Punt Return, Field Goal, Point After Attempt, Timeout, etc.

Wow, this thread was, uh, informative. I suppose the, uh, theme should be:
I don't like you
But I love you
Seems that I'm always
Thinking of you
Oh, oh, oh
You treat me badly
I love you madly
You've really got a hold on me
You really got a hold on me

Nice voice you have there WV!

Did you think Milroe got that first down on 4th and 1?
This, to me, was probably the most egregiously bad call of the game. Milroe barely even made it back to the line of scrimmage, the ref spotted the ball right at the edge of the first down marker, no review and not even a measurement.

you guys cry about anything. Lots of flags last night. If I’m not mistaken more on bama than us. The only call that I thought was blatant bs was the offsides call where we moved laterally. Now go through and find some TN holds that didn’t get called. Bet you could find some.

I will say that in the last 11 games, TN opponents have been called for fewer than 10 live ball penalties. The power 5 average is 3.5 per game / per team! We get less than 1 per game, so holding not being called is mo surprise.

The number was 5 in 10 games before Bama. I think they were called for a few live ball fouls.

To be clear, our plan is to pretend like Pearce wasn’t offsides, right?
It is so hard to tell live. Even if you slow it down he was barely offsides when the ball was snapped, so I get it as why they didn't call it in real time.

This isn't unique to UT. Bama has a fairly long history of getting favorable officiating regardless of who they play. The official that called facemasking to keep a Bama drive going... stood there and WATCHED the WR grab the face mask of UT's player. Should have been off-setting penalties.

The Line judge was particularly bad. He did not call the facemask. He called a questionable PI. He ignored an obvious illegal procedure that facilitated Bama's first score. He made the phantom holding call on a Thornton behind a big Sampson run. He made the illegal downfield that nullified a big play for UT. Now if he were making bad calls both ways then I'm with you. He didn't.

Holding is very subjective and I don't agree with two of the 3 being a particular problem. But the 2nd one was TOO MUCH. If you watch the whole clip the guy's jersey was stretched about a yard on a play that would have likely produced a safety and changed the entire complexion of the game.

He wasn't offsides. You can watch the replay- if you want to call offsides there, you have to call false start on the OT, who flinched first. Pearce moved on him and he still didn't cross into the neutral zone before the snap.

I watched it over IMO he timed it perfectly but if you're just watching the line as a whole and not watching his foot move exactly when center started the snap, he looks offsides because the rest of our D line had a delayed movement, that usually gets called offsides because the refs are human and have to go on perception, and it looked out of kilter. It was like he knew the snap count and was sitting on go or he has great instincts and timing and a good eye for the ball and great fast twitch first step, on 2nd thought he has all that, actually sounds like his recruiting profile. ;)
If you watch it again, the OT actually moved first. It looked to me like Pearce timed his jump on the OT. If anything was to be called, it should have been a false start.

The blown offsides call that resulted in a sack might very well have been the biggest play of the game
A fast bang play were the human eye isnt fast enough to make the call they let it go . Guys being tackled or held in blatant fashion not so much .

Watch from exactly 2:31:54. The OT flinches first, Pearce goes, OT starts moving all the way early. It's super clear that Pearce was keying on the OT. The idiot announcing crew and the "rules official" that chose to cover for Bama every single time apparently couldn't even see it in slowmo.

Yep, super clear on that replay that the OT leans back before JP goes.
