Independence Day 2 to Receive Carter Blanchard Rewrite

Independence Day 2 is set for a rewrite today as Variety reports that Carter Blanchard (the upcoming Spy Hunter) has boarded the project, taking over a draft by James Vanderbilt.

To be directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day 2 is set for release on July 1, 2016. That date marks the 20th anniversary of the 1996 original, which grossed $817.4 million worldwide.

Emmerich previously confirmed that a number of the original film's characters appear in the script with Jeff Goldlum having already confirmed his involvement. Will Smith, however, has stated that he will not be back. Bill Pullman, Randy Quaid, Mary McDonnell, Brent Spiner, James Duval and Vivica A. Fox also starred in the original.

In my opinion if this thing doesn't begin filming by September, it want make its 20th Anniversary release day. I'm betting it would have several months of CGI and post production work after filming is over.

Liam Hemsworth can currently be seen fighting a totalitarian state in The Hunger Games series, but once it’s over he could move on to more otherworldly enemies. The Aussie actor has reportedly received an offer for the Independence Day sequel, titled ID Forever.

TheWrap got the scoop. Hemsworth may be joined by Michael B. Jordan, who was previously rumored for an unspecified role.

Roland Emmerich, who helmed the 1996 original, is back for the sequel, as are stars Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. Will Smith is not expected to return. Though we imagine if Smith has a change of heart, he’d be welcomed back with open arms. ID Forever also reteams Emmerich with Independence Day producer Dean Devlin. Harald Kloser will also produce.

Hemsworth is best known for playing Katniss’ BFF / love interest Gale in The Hunger Games series, which concludes this fall with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2. Outside of Panem, his credits include the Nicholas Sparks romance The Last Song, and the action thrillers The Expendables 2, Paranoia, and Empire State.

Emmerich revealed in 2013 that ID Forever will pick up about two decades after the events of the original. Two Earth decades, anyway — it might be a different case for the aliens. He explains:

The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years….It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.
He also stated at the time that the characters will be a mix of familiar faces and new ones. The casting so far bears that out. Here’s Emmerich again:

It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].
Emmerich and Devlin wrote the early drafts of the ID Forever script, followed by rewrites from James Vanderbilt and Carter Blanchard. As of last November, production was expected to begin in May 2015. Fox has already set a release for June 24, 2016 — almost exactly 20 years after the debut of the original.

Jessie Usher, who headlines the Starz original series “Survivor’s Remorse,” has taken a leading role in director Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2. Emmerich himself broke the news on his official Facebook page with The Hollywood Reporter chiming in to reveal that Usher will be playing Dylan Hiller, the son of Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller from the original ID4. Ross Bagley played the part in the 1996 original.

“My producing partner Harald Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition,” Emmerich says of the chance encounter that brought Usher to his attention. “As they say, the rest is history!”

Set to hit theaters June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), Independence Day 2 is looking to begin production in May with a script most recently rewritten by Carter Blanchard (best known for the short-lived 2009 series “G vs E”). Previous drafts were done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then by James Vanderbilt. Although Will Smith will not be returning, both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to reprise their roles as David Levinson and President Thomas J. Whitmore, respectively.

The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser.

UPDATE: Emmerich has confirmed via Twitter that Jeff Goldlbum is now confirmed as is Liam Hemsworth, who was rumored for a leading role last month. Golblum will reprise his role as David Levinson while it is believed that Hemsworth will be playing the son-in-law of Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore.

Hopefully they get Judd Hirsch back as Golblum's father! I really liked the chemistry they had in their back and forth banter!

Wouldn't it make more sense to release it on Independance Day weekend?

And I still think Will Smith should be in it, even if just a glorified cameo.

Roland Emmerich has booked another Independence Day actor to return for Fox’s sequel, adding Vivica A. Fox to the cast rejoining Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman from the mega-tentpole 1996 original that made $811 million worldwide. Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg have also joined up for the pic, which is eyeing a May production start and a June 24, 2016, release date. Fox played Will Smith’s girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow in the original but she won’t be snuggling up to Smith for the sequel; he says he is not returning.

I haven't been keeping up with this over the last month and was just looking over the cast and noticed they got Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch back along with Brent Spiner as well (I thought his character died?)

I noticed they recast the President's daughter who was played in the original by Mae Whitman.

Hanks has said there will never be another Forrest Gump. Hanks and Zemekis did talk about making a sequel, but when 9/11 happened, that changed.

It was important to the plot that they get someone with bigger jugs. :)
