Indiana Fires Sampson

it's just another example of the basketball IQ of so many on this board (and the entire fanbase) that make it essentially impossible for me to ever develop an interest in UT men's basketball.

If other people's idiocy bothers you that much, then it's hard to see how you can stand to be much of a fan of UT football either.

i think it helps that I grew up a UT football fan, so I've learned to adjust. I can't just jump in to UT basketball now.

I doubt it. Firing Sampson will be enough to stave off any serious punishment.

not if they use the lack of oversight argument which frankly fits here nicely. though it's unlikely they would get any more than a single year postseason ban.

If Rick Greenspan, the AD who hired a known cheater and then acted shocked when he cheated, doesn't meet the same fate, IU is making a huge mistake.

....and most IU fans feel the same way.

As to Pearl, who knows?? I have heard Skiles and Motta the most. Seriously doubt Coach Knight too much bad blood spilled over the last few years.

Sorry for the whole mess, Sampson was a pretty nice guy, he could definitely coach (and I expect he will coach again someday), but the dishonesty/arrogance can not and should not be tolerated at Indiana or anywhere else for that matter.

For all those that bash Petrino and Saban for jumping ships, leaving UT now should result in homicide for Pearl. Not even counting his actions prior to UT, leaving the Vols now after the way he has talked up the program, the area, the fans and the school would be completely disrespectful and disgraceful.

Well, it's admirable that you're not just jumping on the bandwagon as it rolls by. For those of us masochists who've been following UT basketball for the last couple of decades, however, this year has been pretty special. The only thing I can really compare it to is when the Braves went worst-to-first in 1991.

At somewhere anyone cares about? How dumb would an AD have to be to be the one to give him his 3rd chance?

he'll show up somewhere in a couple of years. if todd boseman who gave players $25K to play for cal can get another job anyone can.

Not sure how realistic the Pearl to IU rumors are, but why go to a place where all you would ever be regarded was second best? He can build his own legacy at UT.

actually the only time i've ever jumped ship, was to get off the braves bandwagon right around the time of the World Series. I was always fine with supporting both an AL and an NL team and due to my grandparents, the Braves were my NL team. I hated how the program was ran from about '91 on and realized when they finally won the Series, I didn't even really care.

Seriously. With a little luck and some hard work, Pearl could essentially become the General Neyland of Tennessee Basketball. Why pass up that opportunity?

I'd be very interested to hear what you mean by this. I've always thought Schuerholz was a dramatically overrated GM, but certainly nothing he ever did was so offensive that it turned me against the team.

Indiana Basketball has probably the best history of adherence to the rules of any major program of the last 40 years. It's hard to make out a lack of institutional control case when Sampson lied to IU's investigators. The NCAA bears a good portion of the responsibility for this because they didn't put Sampson on Show Cause status.

I know I was young and i guess impressionable, but he was constantly trying to improve the team by shedding my favorite players. I hated the revolving door at first base for one.

Todd Bozeman was out of coaching for the better part of a decade. Sampson is toxic right now. Enjoy the NBDL, Kelvin.

the president who oversaw and recommended the hiring of Sampson was given a vote of no confidence by his faculty. he stepped down.

this issue was in no way related to his problems with his faculty, but i found it interesting nonetheless.

i don't think the violations by Sampson are anywhere near the severity of those by Bozeman (without be close or knowledgeable to the UCLA program).

the fact that Sampson lied to the school (about something he's previously been in trouble for) is the major problem.

No, it wouldn't. It would be business. Ask 100 D-I coaches which is the better job. At least 80 will tell you it's IU. Anyone naive enough to buy what coaches say when they're talking about how great whatever situation they're presently in is deserve to have their feelings stepped on . It's a cold, calculating world. If fans can't handle that they should watch Dancing With The Stars for their competitive fix.

Bozeman was Banned from basketball for 8 years. He is coaching a very good Morgan State basketball team right now.

Sampson would be a good fit for the Depaul HC job.

Morgan State is most certainly not "very good."
