Indiana Fires Sampson

I know I was young and i guess impressionable, but he was constantly trying to improve the team by shedding my favorite players. I hated the revolving door at first base for one.

Fair enough. Schuerholz was always fairly ruthlessly unsentimental about roster moves -- and not always to the team's benefit, either. Having a rotation of Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz for so many years really covered up for the deficiencies of the rosters Schuerholz put together -- until October rolled around every year, of course.

Indiana Basketball has probably the best history of adherence to the rules of any major program of the last 40 years. It's hard to make out a lack of institutional control case when Sampson lied to IU's investigators. The NCAA bears a good portion of the responsibility for this because they didn't put Sampson on Show Cause status.

completely agree, but the fact is the hired the man who had a known history of these type of issues (proven or not). they have to take some culpability. either way it's hard to see any sanctions that are going to make this a bad job.

considering what pearl has done for the program. i'd hope he could flip off every single person in the state of tenn on his way out and still be remembered fondly.

No, it wouldn't. It would be business. Ask 100 D-I coaches which is the better job. At least 80 will tell you it's IU. Anyone naive enough to buy what coaches say when they're talking about how great whatever situation they're presently in is deserve to have their feelings stepped on . It's a cold, calculating world. If fans can't handle that they should watch Dancing With The Stars for their competitive fix.

I'm not saying IU isn't the better job, but you can't talk up the program and leave on a whim like that right before you get them to the top. There are countless coaches who have been called weasels both on here and by national media for doing just that. If he wants to become that, let him. But don't crack on Petrino and the others without cracking down on Pearl.

Well, it's admirable that you're not just jumping on the bandwagon as it rolls by. For those of us masochists who've been following UT basketball for the last couple of decades, however, this year has been pretty special. The only thing I can really compare it to is when the Braves went worst-to-first in 1991.
What a year that was.

The last real "race" in baseball.

I am ready for some Braves Baseball!

The last real pennant race was in 1993, when the Giants and Braves both finished with over 100 wins, but the Giants "only" won 103 and still went home empty. If that happened now, both teams would be resting starters down the stretch and neither team would care much who won the division. I still love baseball, but the wild card sucks. Imagine what the last few years in the AL would have been like if both the Red Sox and Yanquis knew that only one of them could make the playoffs.

Pearl isn't going anywhere, and that's just a gut feeling. As for Indiana, get ready for a lot of Ohio St. fans to be ticked off when their coach jumps ship.

You are right, the 1993 season was the "last" true race. I remember reading about Bonds coming over to Leo during the All Star game and telling him the race was over. Wish we could get another starting rotation like that year; Steve Avery, John Smoltz, Pete Smith, Maddux and Glavine. 91 was an awesome run though, if they would have won the series that year there would have been no way to top it.

Wild Card sucks imo. Bring back the race!
