Interesting comment on Butch Vs. Dooley...

We're talking about Atlanta here, who wouldn't want to recruit i Atlanta? If you had a choice between checking out a player in northern Minnesota or Atlanta, which would you prefer? And, if you had the chance to eat some of your momma's home cooking? Of course you would.

hahaha... you know he was joking, but you also know that all those people would much rather have Dools on the hill.

Yeah, I know he was.

I don't care what those people want. I'm pretty sure TV wants UT to be good again though. Too large of a fanbase to be missing out on those ratings.

Completely off topic, but man I can't wait for the "Battle in Bristol" in 2016. Whoevers idea that was is a freakin genius. Whether or not Butch and Dave had anything to do with the idea or not, they are brilliant for seeing the value of it.

Ran across this 247 article this morning and I read a sentence that floored me.....

"Howie DeCristofaro, who coaches Sapp and three-star 2015 guard Nick Wilson at Atlanta-area Milton High School and has sent multiple players to Tennessee and other SEC programs over the past several years, said the Vols aren’t working any harder in the Atlanta area under Jones than they did under Dooley."

....Whaaaaaaaaaa? I find this extremely hard to believe but hey who knows. Maybe Dooley only threw himself onto a few schools and hung on for dear life. What are y'alls thoughts?

U didn't read far enough. I goes to say Dooley recruited 2nd tier players heavily that Uga Bama and uf didn't offer. Theirs your perspective to this quote. They were not elite players minus 3 or 4 players out of his tenure

I followed up my OP after I read through the whole thing. It just struck me because most, including myself, believed that Dools never even tried. Apparently they put time in around Atlanta, and I don't blame him. His name does carry some weight around Gawja. But I totally agree Butch is targeting higher profile kids because he knows he can get them.

Well the Dooley name is a good one in Georgia that doesn't surprise he tried To capitalize on that.

But it also says...

Thanks for sharing the FULL story. In full context it's not as powerful of a quote as the OP suggests. Thanks to both of you for sharing.

This is one of the dumbest things I've read lately. It's funny because I actually thought of Dooley earlier. A friend was telling me he'd damaged his knee skiing and I happened to remember that Dooley did the same thing. But what really made me chuckle... Dooley did it right in the middle of the season. Most successful coaches work absolutely insane amounts and time. Urban Meyer and saban (though I hate the both) are obsessed with their jobs and work around the clock. Yet here's our coach. Out having a ski party the week of a huge game. What a doofus... No pun intended

It's crazy to think that if he had beaten LSU and North Carolina and handled business versus KY, that dude might still be our coach. Yikes!

Don't you have anything more important than this to worry about.

Dooley is gone, Butch is the coach. Dooley is done, over, want be back, so let's move on.

Pretty sure I posted the link to the FULL story in the original post. Even in its entirety, anyone saying Dooley worked as hard as Butch was shocking to me. My quote was meant to make you wanna look at the original story in full.

“But I will say that I think Coach Jones is doing a better job of recruiting the upper-tier kids rather than the second-tier kids, and he’s getting some of them. He and his staff are doing a great job.”

There's the key line in his statement. Dooley may have worked the Atlanta area just as hard, but Butch and staff are not just drawing a look from the tier 1 players, they are signing some of them.

Bottom line... Butch? Holding hand way up here. Dooley? Holding hand way down there.

I apologize. I see that you did now. I agree with you that it's intriguing to read a comment like that. I have to say like others have pointed out, that the HS coach loses credibility when he says Sunseri did a good job.

Dooley had to work hard in some areas. UT did get some very good talent. CP, D Rogers, Tiny and Hunter for example.
He also worked hard on making sure all the waste baskets matched and that shower etiquette was top notch.
Based on Dooley's daddy connections, I'm sure it opened doors. The difference is that CBJ is opening his own doors. And how would a HS coach know how much is done at the university? Did Dooley have foundation weekend or orange carpet weekend? I dont knkw of any HS coacjes going on visists with these kids. The coaches are limited to visits at the school.

The proof is on the pudding. This staff is working andaking UT a household name. If CBJ can bust out some wins then it will only get better.
