Iowa Caucus

The delegate process confuses me because its not based on the percentage of the votes received. Iowa can run their primary/caucus in whatever way suites them, I'm glad we have a straight primary.

It's like that for all of the states this year I thought... not just Iowa.

No you elect county delegates. The county delegates elect state delegates, then the state delegates elect the delegates to go to the primary. It's pretty screwed up.

Whatever the result tonight, the winner is Rick Santorum.

Actually, I amend my previous statement slightly. I think if Romney finishes in 3rd, even if by a few votes, it definitely won't be the story he wanted tomorrow morning.

I don't see how he wins on economic issues. Obviously the Socials like him. I wonder if this will be a trend or an aberration. SC and FLA will be interesting.

A Santorum nomination will be a death knell for the GOP. Such an action would demonstrate that the GOP only pays lip service to fiscal conservatism but really only cares about legislating social norms.

Santorum will start getting killed tomorrow just like Gingrich and Cain did.

Paul has already been on camera trying to paint him as liberal.

I think that is spot on.

Santorum will fair poorly in NH but could do decent in SC.

Perry appears to be dropping out.

Saw this on FB (believe it was from the NYT). The percentages refer to percent of voters in the county with a Bachelors or higher degree and the other shows who won that county.

Hmmm. Looks like Romney will edge out Santorum.

Cain got almost as many votes as Huntsman.

I think it's funny so many are tore up over Rick, but in reality this doesn't mean as much as some are making. It gives momentum, that's about it.

It has more to do with who finishes at the bottom. Lots more twists and turns are coming. Can't wait to see what happens in SC.

Santorum put all his chips in Iowa. Given the amount of time he invested, I'd hve been more surprised if he didn't finish where he did.

Candidates do that all the time though. Rarely does it turn out this well.

Early returns have Santorum slightly ahead of Romney but both at 25%

Paul is third 21%
Gingrich is fourth 17%
Perry is fifth 10%
Bachman is sixth 3%
Huntsman was a no show ?

Those early returns are coming from the eastern end of the state and since the west is considered more conservative, Santorum is quite likely to win Iowa.

Gingrich is starting a viscious attack campaign on Romney in New Hampshire with a full page ad running today.

Huntsman is also rumored to be about to start a negative campaign against Romney in New Hampshire.

Of the candidates in this race, though, he's the only one that focused exclusively on Iowa. Even Bachman had a ground team working in NH.

It's Romney's to lose.

But Newt is going on a Mitt Hunt now.

Should get interesting.

mcCains endorsement of Romney will also help a lot in NH.

I'm worried that Newt's attacks will only push voters to Santorum (barf). It would be awesome, albeit unlikely, if Newt's attacks funneled voters to Huntsman.

I don't know what his organization is like in NH, but Santorum just claimed to have been there 30 times.

You have to wonder if Santorum won't just go straight to SC.

I would, if I were him.
