the same could be said for any country in the ME, none of them give a damn about the Palestinians other than to use them as a convenient excuse to resist any peace with Israel.

Well, it's an important distinction, IMO. Merchant ships makes it sound like we were minding our own business, but those merchant ships were necessary to the allied campaign.

Happened before the US declared war. Did not happen before we entered it. Lend/lease, troops in china, supplies, etc... we were in it up to our ears.
