Irwin: Guarantano throws a prettier ball than Manning, but doesn't have the intangibles

What do you guys think? Irwin has seen a lot of QB's in his time. Can JG improve on the mental part of the game enough, even though he has all of the physical tools? Does KC possess these mental attributes that could get us over the top? I was high on Chryst early on, but I had to admit Guarantano threw a nice ball. Is that enough, though, when he can't see what the defense is bringing?

Irwin: Guarantano throws a prettier ball than Manning but doesn't have the intangibles

I think one of the Freshman next year will start. Unless JG vastly improves again before the start of next season.

This is the second time in two days you've confused me.

Do you mean, For those that DO have a personal preference its easier to see? Because I don't have a personal preference.

I don't either. Thats the reason why we can appreciate a great game by JG at AU and a solid performance by Chryst in relief Saturday. The only preference we have is what gives us the best chance to win. Given some of the opinions on here Im pretty sure thats not case with them.

Sorry to start another quarterback thread, but I think his comments are worth reading.

More comments from Irwin below, if you're interested.

.

The only way to get better at the intangibles is by studying and actually playing in live games. Chryst is not the future. Playing him over JG, does not help us get back to where we need to be. We need JG to take the next step like Jonathan Crompton did so that we can get back to being a top 25 team consistently.

What happens if he never takes this Mythical step you are talking about?

Then next year we are playing a redshirt freshman or a true freshman at quarterback.

We need to see JG play the rest of the season to know whether he's going to be the guy or are we going to go with one of the freshmen.

We’ve played 7 games... you don’t think the coaches know if he is the guy or not?

Short term? (the rest of this season) he appears to have the higher ceiling and he's coming back. Assuming he can stay on the field.
Long term? The last 5 games will go a long way toward him grabbing the jobs future and there not being a competition for anything but back up in the off season.

Coach said Strout thows the ball better than any other QB on the team. I don't see JG starting next year.

Could possibly be. Hopefully if he is the starter vs USC which I think he will be. That he shows some improvement in read and release. I don’t want the kid to get hurt.

I think he's fine, but you can only take so many shots before you get unlucky and something breaks. His toughness will never be questioned.

He has some control over the number of the hits he takes pre snap and with just general pocket awareness. Some of them he can do nothing about when guys can't hold blocks.

You also thought KC would get the starting nod this year and Tillman would be a starting WR.

I'm not sure I see Maurer being ready as a true freshman. Hopefully Shrout will take some big strides and can push next year. He's a pretty big project, though.

Tillman has blown his opportunities so far. Like last game instead of running a streak he was run blocking..... he had the ability to start and doesn’t have a redshirt anymore because he has appeared in more than 4 games so I was half right there. Lol, the kid will be a good target eventually.

I saw KC getting the start because of his experience and he does have the ability to score like he proved last game. I think he actually has more touchdowns thrown then JG right now. But, the coach decided JG so again it’s JG until it isn’t. I will support which ever QB is on the field. Maybe if our offensive line is better then JG looks completely different next year.

It’ll be interesting to follow. But, if the Freshman show massive improvement and have better decision making skills and better threats (I.e. scrambling and making plays happen) then they probably have the best chance of starting.

So you said he’d start and you’re half right because he didn’t redshirt? That’s a pretty liberal interpretation of half right lol

Tillman has some great tools and should be solid for us moving forward. If someone like like JJ or Callaway decides to leave early for the draft or someone like Brandon Johnson transfers, he’ll have a good shot at being a big part of the rotation next year once he’s settled in.

Those are some big ifs for freshmen. Very unlikely we see Shrout or Maurer be further along than JG by next Fall.

I’m no JG fanboy and would like to see us have better QB play, but I just don’t see it unless someone new comes into the picture next year. I like Maurer’s upside and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the backup next year, but expecting him to start is probably expecting too much. Shrout has a high ceiling, but he needs a lot of development. For better or worse, we’re probably stuck with JG as our starter for at least one more season.

We’ve just gotta hope either he can finally make some improvements reading things before the snap or that the offense makes enough improvement that it somewhat negates his lack of pocket awareness.

My hope for those two things aren’t high, really. We’re gonna be limited at QB and OL for a while, IMO.
