Is Butch Jones the best recruiter Tennessee's ever had?

Fulmer was an accomplished recruiter. I always said that Fulmer was not as great as everyone thought. People often assumed that no one else could recruit at UT and overcome not having homegrown, in-state talent. When Fulmer had to recruit in this newer culture, he didn't fair as well. He was old school and not innovative in a way that wows these players today.

That'd be a good point . . . if Fulmer hadn't had a top 5 class on 2007. I think he did a poor job of recruiting linemen toward the end, but he was still recruiting well near the end of his tenure.

I think towards the end Fulmer got more wrapped up in stars than a player's film.

Fulmer in his prime did not have to recruit when we were this horrid. However, Butch has taken great advantage of our facility upgrades and legacies. The kicker will be putting trophies in the case.

I wouldn't put that much pressure on the kicker!

I don't think there's a coach in America that pays attention to anything that Rivals or 247 says.

Back on topic though, I love Butch's momentum. I just hope he's able to produce enough hope this year on the field to keep it going beyond his honeymoon period.

Hes recruiting crazy good on strictly telling these kids that tennessee is going to be back on top soon. Imagine what he can do once we start putting wins and it translates directly to the field. Im sure thats whats holding back some of the guys that has us in there final 4 or 5. There jus waiting to see how we do during the season.

this logic works in two directions unfortunately

He is doing a good job selling Tennessee. Right now he can sell a great program with immediate playing time.

That will hopefully change in the future and we will see if Butch can recruit talent that may have wait to play. I'm betting he can, but calling someone the best ever after 1 season is silly.

Legacy players are no longer a lock. He is doing a great job pulling them in also. Butch's results should not be tainted in the least because he has recruited some legacy players. In state talent isnt a lock either. There are plenty of players from TN that have decided to go elsewhere.

I cant stand it when people try to diminish the outstanding results he is having on the recruiting trail.

Great ! Cause I never said they were a lock in fact DD wouldve manage to loose each and every one of them. I said he has taken advantage of them being legacy players. To pretend that a kids close relative playing at UT does not get your foot in the door is very naive.

Its all in the wording. All you had to say was....Butch is doing a great job recruiting all these legacy players and instate players. However, what you said was.....hes doing a great job BUT, they are instate players and legacy players.

Butch getting his foot in their door is a long way from him getting their butt in our program.

It's amazing on how Butch Jones has recruited for us so far. He comes up with crazy ideas in recruiting and he connects with kids so well. He's already pulled in a top 5 class his first year and we could easily have another top 5 class this year if we have an improved season. If Tenneseee shows major improvement these next few years, recruits will take notice. Question is, could Butch Jones be the best recruiter that Tenneseee's ever had in a very long time if we keep showing improvement on the field? What are your thoughts VolNation?

No!!!! Thigpen is the best recruiter.

Remember all of the top claiber players we were able to sign in the early & mid 90's? Well, that one recruiter who was an ace recruiter was the one who got most of them to sign. Then he went to UGA and our recruiting began to slowly decline.

Now, if bUTch doesn't pay Thigpen top money, then he will leave for greener pastures. I am sure that he is looking for more responsibility. If you remain a position coach and the recruiting coordinator, you likely won't get many offers to be a head coach on the college level.

However; if you move up to offensive or defensive co ordinator then you may get some looks.

Thigpen is likely looking for more money and more responsibility.

Just imagine when we are winning consistently every year with Butch. I think that match up with McKenzie and the Bama o-line commit shows the future. TN vs Bama for the 1 and 2 spots in the recruiting rankings each year.

In the future, we will be playing "O Bama" twice a season. Once in the regular season and once in the S.E.C. Championship game.

Like we played Auburn twice in one season in the early 2000's.

if he keeps this pace up, i'd have to say yes! CPF had some dang good classes too tho

Yes he did. But, in the later years, he got sloppy/lazy and took too many risks which burned him in the end. Look at the 5* recruits that were disasters in the years from 05 until Phil was let go. After Cut, Chief and Brooks left, there was no one who could "coach up" those 3 and 4*s to the SEC level. My humble opinion.

BTW, when did Rodney Garner leave UT? Again, my opinion, but UT's pull of major talent in the south (GA and AL) dropped off a cliff when he left.

Not saying you're right or wrong with Thig- who you're describing IMO is Fulmer's Garner. He left because of money and responsibility issues. Look at the list of recruits that were major impacts at UT.

General Robert Neyland is being overlooked here folks. if it weren't for his recruiting we wouldn't have the program we have nor the history.

Butch has done an outstanding job recruiting given the current and recent past state of TN football.

On the football field he needs to go 'balls to the wall' in his play calling. I remember when Fulmer was interim HC while Majors was recovering ('92 maybe) and going for it on 4th and 17 at Georgia. Vols pick up the first down and the win which seemed to catapult the program to a new level.

Here's to hoping Butch has a similar moment in '14 that will help put this program back on the map. Doo-nothing had two chances - LSU and UNC - and couldn't take advantage. Butch is 1 of 2 (UGA and USCjr) so far - here's to faith he can make it 100% this year...

Fulmer had success recruiting and even excelled once certain staff members came aboard for a short period of time during the 1990's. One thing to consider though is that Fulmer, even the great recruiter that he was, really had only 2 other schools to compete against for verbals/commitments during that time frame. The remainder of the SEC back then was not on the same level as it is in it's current state.

For Jones to continue having success on the recruiting trail against the likes of Saban, Miles, Spurrier, Sumlin and Richt shows his gifted abilities as a recruiter. It's just time to begin seeing some results in the W/L columns.

Not to slight anything Neyland did, but any recruiting that went on before about the 80s is even slightly comparable to today.

Everybody has a bad year. Look at spurier last year and this year he is ranked number 2 by rivals.
