Is Butch Jones the best recruiter Tennessee's ever had?

I saw in a magazine recently where we had the 2nd worst conf record, since 2008 I believe it was(Kentucky was last). Fulmer inherited a pretty good program so if Butch can bring it back from those depths I would have to give him the nod.

The way butch is recruiting was status quo for the late 80's and throughout the Fulmer era. We got chuck Webb from Toledo Ohio which had nothing to do with our southern counterparts.
Even as late as 2007 when crompton was signed Fulmer was bringing in top classes on paper. Let's hope that Butch's signees live up to the hype and until they do it's just hype.
I'm excited just like everybody else but so e are getting carried away with the hysteria of having a coach that works hard at it unlike Fooley the fool.:eek:hmy:

you think Majors, Fulmer and staff were 100% legal in recruiting? The Pickens', Carters', Mimms'. Its a can of worms but cheating was the norm. Players got cash handed to them all the time. Pickens and Carter rolled around campus in Alabama type rides. Players were paid for summer jobs they never held and many of those were set up prior to them stepping foot on campus.

It's the way it was. They were good at it. Good in the homes and good at letting players and families know they would prep them for the next level. But it wasn't all legit in recruiting or when the guys like Cobb, Hobby, Harper, etc were playing and there was no apr as they didn't think about going to class.

It's all different. Different eras. Different requirements. Fulmer got the job done in recruiting and it appears Butch is getting it done as well.

Jones is recruiting well, thankfully, but until he puts a team on the field as loaded as UT's 1999 squad, he will not be our best recruiter ever. Fulmer and staff get the nod. That 1999 team had least six guys who had serious NFL careers, as I recall. And what is sad is that that team lost three games! So while recruiting is crucial, you still need to coach them up well. Fulmer was a better recruiter than a coach.

Quality of recruits (Yes)

Coaches talent Evaluation translating to the Field of Play (unknown at the Moment).

Indications are strong he will be the best at recruiting, finding the diamond in the rough, and production on the field.

Right now and I do not expect a change.

Good talent in, staying academically strong, and staying out of jail equals success as long as they are development.

As great as CBJ has it rolling I'm not ready to say he's the best recruiter we've had. Hands down that goes to CPF...really not a discussion IMO on that....but CBJ is gaining ground...and if he can win like CPF and continue the hall on recruits we can revisit it....

Yeah I'm NOT big on comparing "best of all time" because era's are just so much different it's hard to compare apples and oranges...We try to say ,for example Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer and obviously he's right at the top....but its just so much different now than it was 50 years ago its almost impossible to compare...baseball, football etc....it applies to all sports IMO...

Jones is not yet the best recruiter. Fulmer in his hayday was a fantastic recruiter. Two more years for Jones like the last two and we all can call him The king of recruitng.

I personally think recruiting has changed so much from Fulmer's time that it is hard to compare. The use of social media has helped coaches today because recruits can help recruit others so easily. I am a CBJ fan for sure but I also think we have benefited greatly from some Legacy recruiting that worked out. Of course someone still has to convince those guys that UTK is the place to be but it makes it a little easier with family in the background. Either way I am confident we are on the upswing talent wise and morale wise. Both of those will equal wins. 50 daysÂ…..

No!!!! Thigpen is the best recruiter.

Remember all of the top claiber players we were able to sign in the early & mid 90's? Well, that one recruiter who was an ace recruiter was the one who got most of them to sign. Then he went to UGA and our recruiting began to slowly decline.

Now, if bUTch doesn't pay Thigpen top money, then he will leave for greener pastures. I am sure that he is looking for more responsibility. If you remain a position coach and the recruiting coordinator, you likely won't get many offers to be a head coach on the college level.

However; if you move up to offensive or defensive co ordinator then you may get some looks.

Thigpen is likely looking for more money and more responsibility.

Thig just got a $25k raise earlier this year

How about we let the Butch Jones recruits actually play a game before we crown him as the best. Geez. I don't count the recruits that came in in 2013 as the die was already cast by the time Butch got here. 2014 is his first real class. Let's revisit this in about 2018.

It's amazing on how Butch Jones has recruited for us so far. He comes up with crazy ideas in recruiting and he connects with kids so well. He's already pulled in a top 5 class his first year and we could easily have another top 5 class this year if we have an improved season. If Tenneseee shows major improvement these next few years, recruits will take notice. Question is, could Butch Jones be the best recruiter that Tenneseee's ever had in a very long time if we keep showing improvement on the field? What are your thoughts VolNation?

depends on the status of the program in 2017. No way anyone can tell about his recruits so far. Most have not taken a snap

With a little luck on the field , Jones will be able to hand pick nearly anybody he wants in the near future.

Jones is competing against a lot more schools then Fulmer ever had to, think thats why so saw such a decline in his later years.

At the same time, Butch has been a pretty lucky in that some of these highly ranked kids are legacy. (Berry's, McKenzie, Bates, Kelly, etc) and TN talent is better the last couple years then in previous years.

He caught the cycle at the right time, but it still all comes down to winning.

15 is going to be a rough year we all know that, but if he keeps getting people focused on 16 and produces, then the skies the limit on what he can bring in here.
The east right now is worse than it was when Fulmer coached.

Kentucky and Vandy are clearly better. Florida had one recent down year. BCS bowl the year before that... Mizzou was added. South Carolina is clearly better. Georgia is consistently Georgia.

So no, it's not worse.

CPF won a NC with his recruits and i sure hope CBJ does the same. That was a wonderful era for VOL fans.
